Among many politicians in my family tree including U.S. Senators, Members of the House of Lords, UK, etc., my paternal grandfather was a Member of Parliament in Finland.  However, most of my family worked for a living.

Not that I know of, at least not closely related, other than a 4th cousin (or something like that) Tiff Macklem who currently head the Bank of Canada and sets the current interest rate for the country.

William Jones, governor of Rhode Island was an uncle,

 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jones-699

and Nathaniel Edwin Harris, governor of Georgia and very involved with the history of Georgia Tech, was a cousin.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harris-16307

(That took DNA and breaking a brick wall to work out.)

And family lore says my Granny Jackson was of the same line of Irish Jacksons as President Andrew Jackson, but that can probably never be proved one way or the other. Jackson is distinguished as having the least understood paternal line of any president.

Another broken brick wall, finding my 6x-great grandmother, turned out to simultaneously break a brick wall for Beto O’Rourke, who descends from her sister (but he doesn’t know about the favor I did his family genealogy!)

My grandfather was an elected official — member of the school board of Long Beach, California for many years. I have some stories there, like the teacher, just starting her career, who disciplined my mother for talking during class, then freaked out when another teacher told her that she had disciplined the daughter of a school board member. That was a different time, and when a teacher disciplined a student, the parents figured they deserved it and didn’t take issue. But the teacher didn’t know that my grandfather approved! My mother still feels bad about that.

And also according to my mother, my grandfather was approached by Republican Party officials to see if he would run for his US Congress seat. He said no, and supposedly the big reason was that the incumbent Democrat, his presumed opponent, was his friend from Scottish Rite. Again, a different time.

My 2nd great grandfather, Jacob Roth III, was the mayor of South Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio.

Not to mention my 4th cousin, 5x removed, Theodore Roosevelt.

No politicians with a close relationship to me. A very distant uncle was Chancellor of Norway, and that's about it. My wife's family is the opposite:

3rd great grandfather - U.S. House of Representatives, and barely lost race for governor of Pennsylvania
3rd great uncle - U.S. Senator
2nd great uncle - Director of U.S. Mint (a political appointment)
More distant great grandfathers, uncles, and 1st cousins (many times removed) were active in politics, governors, and state and federal congress members

Sort of, and no longer, the explanation my ex had an uncle with the same name as a very famous Canadian politician.

Since I am no longer married to him and politician is dead the theoretical relationship no longer exists.

He was always asked ' do you mean X the politician', and the answer was no, just someone with the same name.

And next came the question. How can there be more than 1 person with the same name?

I suspect the people who asked that question would not have been any good at family history research.

I don't know of any in my direct tree or their spouses.  But, I've been working thru the Kentucky Notables list and was amazed to see that I am distantly related to about a third of them and most of them are from my mom's side---my dad was from Kentucky and mom's family was from Ohio and West Virginia.

On the list of Kentucky Governors, the one closest to me would be Louie Nunn. He was the 52nd Governor of Kentucky from  1967 to 1971.

My father-in-law Sharkey-472 was very interested in local and national politics. He served as a parish counciillor, a borough councillor and county councillor at various times of his life. Additionally he wrote and telephoned MPs and Secretaries of State and members of the Royal Family on matters he was concerned about as well as writing barrages of letters to local and national newspapers.

He also spoke on local radios about various concerns/causes he was dealing with.

After Kath Farrell-3773  his wife died my husband and I had the dubious  pleasure of clearing the house out prior to its sale. There were 14 large crates of papers relating to council matters to be gone through as well as copies of every letter he  had ever written to any interested party on his concerns. Some of it was interesting reading but at one point I felt I was losing the will to live as I waded through council minutes, Chairman's notes, flyers, treasurers reports.... And why would he have kept 37 copies of the same set of minutes?

Yes, of course! I'm proud to have quite a number of ancestors who took responsibility in local politics, e.g. as town mayors or councillors. The earliest, I've found so far, is on my mother's side, my 12GGF Nicolaus Metzolt who was mayor of Stadtilm in Thuringia in the late 1500s (he died in 1592).

And then I just heard from my aunt a couple of months ago that her father, my paternal grandfather, was a councillor in our native Lüneburg. (He also was a group leader in the local Volunteer Fire Brigade.)

I've been encouraged by these examples because democracy - with its checks and balances between legislative, executive and jurisdictive - only works with the involvement of politically informed and active citizens. (So yes, I myself am a municipality committee member for rural development as well as a lay judge at our district court.)

I have quite a few Members of Parliament in my family tree, and I can go back considerably further than the 1500s.

My 17th great grandfather William FitzWarin of Penleigh (FitzWarin-75) was a Member of Parliament for Wiltshire for one term in 1351-52.

Also, I think the Magna Carta Security Barons (appointed to monitor King John's conduct, after he signed the Magna Carta), count as "politicians", and I trace back to at least 4 of them:

*  William Malet

Henry de Bohun,

Robert de Vere

Saher de Quincy

through Lucia (Brooke) Towse (Brooke-2409), my 12th great grandmother.

That's the advantage of the British - it's hard (i.e. close to impossible) to beat Magna Carta when it comes to public office (i.e. politics). ;-)

Thankfully I am a much more comfortable 22 degrees from Malcolm. My wife and I actually resigned from the Liberal Party when he first became head of the party.sad

Besides cousins, my sister was a secretary for a Well-known Political Action Committee. Also, when I was in college, I was the President of the Commuter Club and got to represent the Commuter for the student council for Malone University.

Internet wise? I was one of the Geocities community leader for Geocities back in those days, ran Tournmants for Pogo, second in Command in my Pirate Group for Puzzle Pirates.

If I had the money I thought it might e fun to run for school board or Township Trustee. Just thing :)  Wine for School Board! what a name! Wine for Trustee!

The Maass family in Kankakee Illinois had the Mayor, the police chief and the fire department chief. Thomas Woodrow Maass was the police chief from 1965-1970. Then from 1970-1974 he was the sheriff. So as the poster says, he did run and he did become their hometown sheriff.

Yes. My great uncle was a Minnesota State Senator. He was also murdered by his tenants in the apartment building that he owned.

What makes a politician?  My mother ran for the position of county school superintendent back in the 1980's and won, served two years.  One of my third great grandfathers was Samuel Baker, who served in the Tennessee Legislature in 1861.  Another third great-grandfather Robert Flanagan was an attorney and then was elected as a judge in Missouri in the early 1880's.  He died while in office.  I'm not sure John Doane (Done) would be considered a politician, but he was appointed to a committee to revise the laws in Plymouth, MA.  I'll have to check the dates but I think it was early 1630's.
