Death location for WWII KIA (Air Corps)

Question

This young man was Killed in Action in WWII. The only reference to a death place is a note that says ʻkilled over Austriaʻ, with no source.  [[Long-33132|Lester Long (abt.1908-abt.1944)]]

I have a solid death date, I know that his remains were shipped to Missouri and buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. But no indication of where he was killed.

For death location I used ʻEuropeʻ which is rather vague.

There is a pink message indicating that Long-33132 does not exist.  He really does have a profile which is only minutes old at this point!   I know he will show up soon.

You might try looking for him in Fold3. It sounds like he was an airman, so there might be a missing crew report. I found one of these for a cousin of mine who was a pilot. His plane was shot down late in the war. These reports were originally classified, but they were later declassified and can be quite informative.

I would list the death location as Austria. On that particular mission, they were en route to bomb the Wiener Neustadt Aircraft Factory in Austria. They were forced to abort their mission due to bad weather. Their aircraft was reported missing over Austria and was one of 5 aircraft shot down.
