Rarish surname but several haplogroups

Gatty inc var sp are not common surnames and yet they occur in more than one YDNA haplogroup. I am E-BY5244. There are also Gatty inc var sp in following FTDNA projects-   Gattie, Gatty, in J-PH4970 Project, Gattie, Gatty in  J2a-PF5197 project

What could be the explanation for that?

The PH4970 SNP is a descendant of PF5197. So if the one who is PF5197 also had a Big Y test, then he would likely also be J-PH4970 or very close.  If you compared their Y-STRs then they would likely match sufficiently enough to share a “Gatty” ancestor in a genealogical time frame.

Thank you. I'm the only person at FTDNA with E-BY5244. I have also uploaded my yDNA to yfull where I am E-Y45878 . I have 4 closest matches there. Most frustratingly I have had a 37-2 same surname  match at FTDNA ,since April 2011, who has chosen not to upgrade. I have offered to pay for an upgrade. We're reckoned to share a Gatty ancestor sometime between 1250- 1850. With most likely year rounded to 1650.

You get five free Pro level answers from perplexity.ai and I used one to address your question. It's always worth checking the sources to confirm what they say (as when using Wikipedia), but here's the answer:

The surname Gatty and its variants have diverse origins across different cultures and languages:

- Nickname for Cat-like Characteristics: The surname Gatty and variants like Gatte, Gatti, and Gattes likely originated as nicknames for someone with cat-like traits such as agility, sharpness, or cleverness[2][5].

- German Origin - Companion or Partner: The variant Gattes is of German origin, derived from the German word 'Gatte' meaning 'mate' or 'husband', symbolizing companionship or partnership[5].

- Habitational Name from Scotland: The Scottish origin of Gatty is thought to be a habitational name taken from the place name Geddes, which comes from a Gaelic term for a mountain ridge[4].

- Metronymic Origin from the Name Gertrude: In England, particularly in Cornwall and Devon, Gatty derives from medieval pet forms of the female name Gertrude, an example of a rare metronymic surname origin[1][2].

The surname has also evolved into similar variants like Chatte, Chatty, Gathe, and Gato, which share the common theme of nicknames based on cat-like characteristics[5]. Overall, the diverse origins highlight the rich history behind the Gatty surname.

My point being that with various geographic and lingual origins, it isn't surprising that they would occur in a variety of haplogroups.

Also, I should have written that you get five free Pro level answers every day.
