Hello Pauline

I'm not connected to this family, I'm just originally from Durham myself and spotted the tag.  How do you know that your chap is from the Stockton area, and what info do you already have on him?  Do you have anything from Durham, or do you only have info on him once he arrived in Canada?

I've just looked at his marriage record and the one to Mary Primmer stated his birthplace as Stockton on Tees, Eng; so that answers that question! smiley  He's listed as a widower.

Thank you for responding. Here’s what is known… Joseph Blakey is recorded as jumping ship at a Fogo Island port, Newfoundland, Canada. The exact year is unknown, but possible 1858.

According to Joseph, he had come to Newfoundland from

Stockton-On-Tees, England. The exact date is unknown, but sometime around the year 1871 Joseph drowned when they made a trip to Fogo in a small boat. His body was never recovered.

I was looking at this family in the Stockton/Darlington area that looked promising, but this Joseph is still in the area in the 1871 census.  It nothing else, it rules him out.

1841 census in Houghton le Skerne, Darlington (abt 11 miles west of Stockton)

1851 census as above:

Christening record for Joseph in 1829 in Sadberge, abt halfway between Darlington & Stockton: Joseph Blakey Christening

This Joseph married Elizabeth Adamson in 1856 in Haughton le Skerne, but they seemed to have stayed in the area. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2CY-YXWH

My grandfather, John George Blakey, was born there (1891) and came to Canada (Toronto) in 1899 according to the 1921 census.  His parents were William James Blakey and Elizabeth Crozier.  William's parents were William Blakey and Sarah Knight.

Thank you for replying. This feels like it could be promising. The way it’s known to us is that Joseph was born in 1825 and jumped ship in Newfoundland, Canada about 1858. It’s speculation as to why he came here. I read somewhere that he was a widow. He married a local and drowned in 1871. I don’t have any source showing that he ever travelled back to visit England. He was the the first Blakey to live here it would seem and there are no references to him having siblings or who his parents were.
Well, William James Blakey was born about 1848 and his father William Blakey was born about 1817.  I find it very hard researching English records.  :)

I don't have any siblings in my tree for William b1817 but I suppose Joseph is a possibility.  I guess looking for church records or burial sites in England might provide some direction ...?
