Football managers page

Hello, I've made a free space page that may be of interest to UK and global football (soccer) fans.  I'm still building it but it is already fit for its intended purpose.

There isn't a category for Football Managers and whether there should be or not isn't really a question I'm especially interested in.  Most managers are ex-players so there would probably be lots of duplication.  I think this way works better.

I've made a free space page modelled on the excellent Olympics Project.  It is visible in the categories for English and UK footballers so anyone looking for a specific manager can use it to find them quickly (at least once it's complete).  It is also a reference point for building and connecting profiles for football managers who do not yet have Wikitree profiles (or finding them if they haven't been categorised).

I think it makes sense having just one reference page for all the UK countries rather than separate ones for England, Scotland and "the leftover bits" as seems to happen in other areas.  I've thrown Ireland in because Irish football managers tend to come from the same pool of players as the UK managers.  I'm staying in my lane, but if anyone finds a French national manager or somesuch and wants somewhere to index them, we can always add another list to the page (and change the name).  I guess that goes for assistant managers etc too.

If anyone wants to jump in and help improve it (once I've got distracted with something else) please feel free.  Or if anyone has some time or special interest in researching old football managers and connecting them to the Big Tree, join the party!  Otherwise I shall just plough on alone.

(It was probably unwise to post this while everyone in the UK is asleep)

You say on your page: "in general only deceased individuals are expected to have Wikitree profiles."

Don't forget Living Notables! (and some of these football managers will have a Wikipedia page in three languages, which qualifies them to be a Living Notable).

I've no objections to living notables being indexed on the page but I don't want to encourage creation of profiles for living people outside the Notables project.  The page is really to encourage creation of profiles that can be edited and categorised easily by anyone.

Sounds interesting! I might see whether I can help out!

All help welcomed, whether it be researching and connecting forgotten managers of the past, or improving the architecture and presentation of the page!

Thank you!

We can link the page in different categories. There is a category for Coaches and we can also easily put it into the category for Association football. There might be even more categories to put it into.

One question: Do you only want it for UK managers or would it be also for foreign managers who won titles with UK teams (currently most notable Jürgen Klopp in Liverpool)?

As conceived, it is for managers of clubs and national teams in the UK and Ireland, which will include people like Klopp, Guardiola, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Berti Vogts, Giovanni Trappatoni and Fabio Capello.  There's a nationality column so the foreign managers will stand out.

But there's no reason it can't be expanded.  It's just a collection of lists, and we can easily add more lists to it, like Danish Managers, European Cup Winning Managers, Assistant Managers And Coaches.  If someone is specifically interested in researching and connecting people in "categories" like that they are welcome to use the page.

Great page! I added / connected Roy Hodgson's dad and family but didn't add Roy due to being nervous about adding living people! If someone could add him that would be great.

Completely with you on the nervousness!  Last year I added/connected all the 1966 World Cup Final winning England team except Geoff Hurst (Bobby Charlton was still alive at the time but had a Living Notable profile).  But like you, I connected his father.

Great free-space page, and your profile for Huddersfield Town manager Herbert Chapman is a model of striking the right balance between genealogy and notability.  I didn't know about the ban from football following his time at Leeds.

Perhaps I missed it, but I didn't notice a link back to the freespace page on his profile, which would increase the visibility of your page and perhaps encourage others to contribute?

I just built the page out of nothing last night, give me a chance! :)

It will increase their visibility because people looking for football managers now have an index which isn't too hard to find when looking through football-related categories.

But yes, absolutely, there's no reason not to add the freespace page to individual profiles the way we add categories.  It's basically a back-door category, when you look at it!
