This is a photo taken 5 Oct 1985. The sport is Fly Fishing, and they are about to be wading and casting with a fly rod in the White River in Arkansas. They are fishing for trout, and they were always successful catching them, but most of the time they would throw them back in the river to catch again another day. L-R: Wayne Brown, my son Mitch Nelson, Wade Brown, and my husband Mike Nelson.

What a amazing photo Alexis love the photo thanks you for sharing ❤️
Susan, thank you for your sweet comment. They had many wonderful years of fishing on the White River, and they even tied their own flies out of feathers and all kinds of different things that would attract the trout.
Alexis, the joy of fishing with their fathers......in 1955, when I was 11, my father introduced me to salmon fishing, in the inside ocean waters of Vancouver Island.  When we arrived at the tip of small Cole Island, my father explained that conditions might favor a fly, rather than a spoon and no sooner had I put the Bucktail Fly in the water, a 5 1/2 pound Coho made off with it in a huge semi-circle.  My first catch......I shall dedicate it to Mitch.

John, thank you for your great story about fishing with your father. I read your story to my husband, and he thought it was wonderful. Also thank you for the dedication.heart

Thankyou, Alexis......I made an error of my age in 1955, I was 9 not 11.

John, that made you were one year older than me, but I actually thought you were younger; so I am one year older than you.heart

In the season 1950/1951 my father's junior football team ended on top of their league with the same number of points as another team, so a playoff game needed to be played.

The special thing was that this game would be played at the Olympic Day in Amsterdam at the Olympic stadium. A one day sports spectacle that showcased different sports, with appearances of athletes like Fanny Blankers-Koen, the Dutch national football team, gymnastic demonstrations, an equestrian event, etc.

When their football match ended in a draw a series of penalties had to make the decision. Apparently in that time these penalties were taken by one player of each team, not different players like it is now. My father was the penalty taker for his team and according to him (this might be a tall tale) he scored 22 times in a row, before the other team missed, and they became champion.

EDIT: My father is the tall guy.

Wow, what a day that must have been!
Always believe your father's tall tales......as I have found, in research, the truth comes out......well. some of it.

I uploaded a sports photo of my grandfather's amateur football team in which he sponsored it. A Fiordalisi Furniture football team. They were the first amateur sports team to play in the Cleveland Browns football stadium. They played a team from Detroit but lost in the last quarter.

1930's sport fishing, for Rainbow Trout and Kokanee, at Okanagan Lake, British Columbia, Canada.   In conversations, with my father, he spoke of trolling deep, in the wintertime, to catch some big ones.

John, thank you for sharing the wonderful fishing photos. The best trip my son’s Boy Scout troop made was to go fishing in Canada. They carried canoes, and my husband just told me that they stayed in the lakes fishing for Walleye and Smallmouth Bass. They threw several back, but they kept some and had a fish fry at the end of the trip.
Alexis, Walleye and Smallmouth Bass are not native to the coastal territory where I fished, however, I've had reason, in the last year, to study them.   When I was in grade 2 and living in central B.C., I had a best friend, whose father was an excellent hunting and fishing guide, and this week have just discovered that his ancestors, who are on WikiTree, were Hudson Bay Company fur traders, that travelled the rivers and lakes from central B.C. to Oregon.
John love your fishing photos they are amazing thank you so much for sharing
Thankyou Susan, I am grateful for the boxes of photos passed down from my father and his mother......they verify the stories I was told.

This photo is one of my first cousins Charles playing cricket on a beach somewhere on the south coast of England about 1967. His sisters are playing with sand in the background.

Charles is still a cricket fanatic, regularly spends entire weekends or 5 days for the international contests called Test matches, watching cricket matches at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Warwickshire, England.  He has season tickets.

The year is 1972. I am eleven years old and in my last year of primary school at St Mary's Star of the Sea boy's school, Sandymount, Dublin. Ireland's National sport is Gaelic Football and also Hurling. I am on our school team and we reach the 'Clanna Gael Cup' final. Early rounds are played in local public parks but in Dublin City the final's of these competitions are played at Croke Park (Ireland's National Stadium, Capacity 90,000). We had about 100-200 spectator's at our Finalsurprise. Our school had not won, or even been in a final for almost twenty years. We played  St Michael's of Inchicore and ran out winners by 3-6 to 3-2

I am front row, 3rd from left.

This photo is of my Grandfather(2nd from the right). He was a member of the rowing team at the Havana Yacht Club. He was also an avid swimmer and continued to compete in competitions into his 80s.

When my mother was young she used to go on vacation with her sister's family (my mother was a lot younger than her siblings). They usually went camping in France, five people and all gear in and on the car.

Now, what does this have to do with the sports theme?

Since my uncle used to be a cyclist when he was younger, the itinerary was often adjusted so they could get a glimpse of the Tour de France and the Dutch riders (who were fairly successful in the mid 50s).

At 1:04 PM CDT on May 29, 1991 my grandmother Dorothea Vavra took to the Wrigley Field mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Moments prior Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Brickhouse-102 (Hey-Hey!) acted as her pitching coach in the Cubs front office providing delivery advice and words of encouragement. Then the Die-Hard Cubs Fan (Source: Certificate) was escorted onto the field by her son. As the pitcher took the mound conditions were 84° F, cloudy with no precipitation and an 8 mph wind from Right to Left.

An announced attendance of 31,359 fans watched as the 77 year old used her softball skills to perform a triple windmill windup and deliver an underhand pitch arching to home plate. Cubs rookie catcher Erik Pappas received the throw on a short bounce. Her performance received loud cheers from the crowd.
