John Anthony of Portsmouth Rhode Island, d. 1675
and
John Anthony who intended to sail on the Hercules in 1634

may be the same person, but R. C. Anderson believes they may not be.  Looking at the change log it can't be determined if the Hercules John's profile was actually intended to be the John d. 1675, since information was added later in an effort to source the profile.

My question directed at PGM is would you like both profiles to remain, since the Hercules John is listed in the Great Migration Series although probably not the same man as John d. 1675? Will you pick him up as a PGM candidate?

or Should we merge the two profiles?

My thought is that with two distinct entries in the Directory we should probably maintain the two separate profiles. Perhaps the PM of the "intended sailor" (Anthony-740) could be convinced to remove the conflicting death date that is causing the confusion?

Concerning John Anthony, my many-greats grandfather:

Dr. John Anthony of London did have a son named John, but there is very little evidence of him, unlike Dr. John's father Dr. Francis and grandfather Derrick, of whom there are reams, but in my opinion, not connected to us at all.

Where did the date of 1607 come from?

In 1620 John may have been born somewhere, but it wasn't Portsmouth!

The John Anthony who signed the Oath of Alliegance and Supremacie in 1634 may have indentured his passage, so to speak, making him a servant for some time after that.

In 1640 he was made a Freeman of Newport, not Portsmouth.  This confuses me.  See Rhode Island Colonial Records, vol. 1.

Was a "servant" at some time before 1642 - see his land transaction with Richard Tew in that year, witnessed by Susannah Anthony.

His first child John was born in 1642, so he was probably married a year or so before that.  And probably married as a young man, not a (1642 - 1607 = 35) 35 year old man.  Unless ... many possibilities.

He had beautiful handwriting, very well-schooled in penmanship.  There is a 1655 sample of his writing in The Early Record of the Town of Portsmouth, 1901.

Was a "Hamshere (Hampshire, not Hampstead, Mr Savage!) man in old England" - see his death notice in the Land Evidence book in the Portsmouth Town Clerk's office.

That's what I know!  Merging them makes sense, plus a little clean-up.  I'm quite new here, so I'm not going to mess with it, just add my 22 cents.

Sincerely,

Ellen Anthony
