Hi Wikitreers,

We have Corporal John W. Haley a veteran of the 17th Maine Infantry Regiment Company I who was an eye witness at the Wheatfield in the Battle of Gettysburg. The brief story of his account is brought back to life in the YouTube by the American Battelfield Trust.

Per his FindAGrave memorial which also has a great photo of him!

He loved reading, writing, history and genealogy. Haley was born and raised in the twin cities of Biddeford and Saco, Maine, he worked at the mills and served for three years with Company I of the 17th Maine Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. After the war, he returned and went to work at the Saco and Biddeford Gas-Light company for 14 years before becoming librarian at the Dyer Library in 1892, a position he held for 28 years.”

I find this veteran of the U.S. Civil War very interesting as his legacy details and think he should be shared with the community.

He apparently didn’t have a Wikitree profile?

He needs connecting a great veteran the project might be very interested in?

Thank you

Note: see newsclips on profile he was Not a fan of “movies” as he was able to live to see the early 1920’s

Edit: What was his middle name?

He should now be connected in his paternal line.

There is a detailed biography for him at:

https://www.google.com/books/edition/Maine_Biographies/6xGm94QH4K4C?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Nathan+Gilpatric+Haley&pg=PA144&printsec=frontcover

He apparently wrote some extended memoirs:

Thank you Rogeryes

The book would be a great civil war enthusiast must have!

I’m surprised he survived the war! Amazing

Edit: I’ll get a copy it looks really good a must have laugh

Just a side note I was looking for his replacement as librarian and town historian Miss Nellie F. Smith which didn’t turn up in FindAGrave yet…she apparently is the first woman to hold that position. I believe his assistant for years prior.
