Challenge of the Week: Add missing Find A Grave connections between existing profiles

1.0k views

Hi WikiTreers,

imageAleš's WikiTree+ data analysis has found thousands of people who are connected as parents and children or spouses on Wikidata pages or Find A Grave memorials, but are not connected on WikiTree even though they both have profiles.

The Wikidata hints can be difficult to address. The Find A Grave hints are much more abundant and easier to handle.

For example, here's how to handle items on the table for FindAGrave - Possible mother (1800-1899), i.e. 19th century mother-child connections.

Look in the Relation (Rel.) column for any child-mother pair and click the links to open their WikiTree profiles. Then click the links below those to open their Find A Grave memorials. You might want to right-click the links and keep all four open in separate tabs to review them.

Not all the information on Find A Grave is reliable. If there is a photo of a single gravestone that connects the mother and child, you can use that as your only source to connect them. Otherwise, either look for other sources to verify the connection, or mark the relationship as uncertain and add a Research Notes section on the child's profile saying that the relationship is based on Find A Grave and has not been independently verified.

Will you work on some of these with us? If so, or if you have any questions, please post below.

Thanks for helping!

It was working for me a couple of hours ago. I just got two finished. But now, same message as above.

The requested URL was not found on this server.

I’m see the same “Not Found”….
I just found it depends on which link you choose. The “some of these” works better.

I'll tackle a few.

Just a warning to participants - you may grow your 'Unconnected' list. I participated in the Connect-a-Thon and was surprised I had quite a few unconnected profiles on mine, which I'm pretty sure came mostly from a previous Find-A-Grave hunt. Of course, growing the world tree is a good thing.

I hear you, Jim. I'm in the same boat. :)
Yes and I understand we can post the name on G2G for adoption, or on the Name Study.  Then you can remove yourself from the Profile Manager.

I do these suggestions quite a bit to find profiles that need connection to the main tree quite a bit. Of course I will continue helping.

I will work on some too. I had a data doctor suggestion myself for a possible first wife for a profile that I manage due to a FindAGrave entry. I could not prove it, and the man and woman are not buried in the same cemetery, but will definitely be looking closer at that possibility!

I will participate. Is there somewhere we need to report what we have connected?

I will try to work on some. Strangely, I am manager of one of the profiles in question laugh. I was looking at the profiles for his brother and family just yesterday.

I will definitely work on this when I’m well enough!

My personal goal, is to look for all the connections between burials in Fairville Baptist Cemetery ( Fairville, Saline, MO), and find as many living descendants as I can.

A wonderful, energetic friend has almost single handedly cleaned up the cemetery…but it is still, technically abandoned.

Greetings - I note there are long list of profiles requiring attention.  My prefered place to start is to search for members of my paternal family, then to search for members of my maternal family then my grandmothers families.  Could the Manager explain how can I search for persons who have a specific family name. Many thanks Paul

If you open the long list of profiles  press Ctrl + f (Find in Page). Enter the family name you want in the Search box. It will highlight all of those names on the page. Then you can click the 'up' and 'down' arrows to quickly go through them.
Many thanks Patrick for your helpful, information.
You will have to do that on each page like I do. But it does accomplish what you are looking for.

I connect people all the time on Find a Grave, even those I don't know, so I will be happy to work on this. I especially work on finding children of large families, as I have seven children myself. heart
