Good. The name was probably "Slabach" or even "Schlabach". This is a German surname, and as a general pattern English speakers ordinarily lose  the German "ch" sound. It usually becomes a silent "gh" (Bach > Baugh).   

SLABACH is older, and I am going with it until I see evidence for the transition, likely betwen 1880 and 1900.
