Help us find and improve next week's Year of the Dragon Featured Connections

The Chinese New Year celebration starts February 10th. This year is under the sign of the dragon in the zodiac, so we're looking for notables born under the sign of the dragon in the Connection Finder next week, starting with Bruce Lee, accomplished martial artist and actor. (Bruce's profile needs some love, if someone wants to volunteer!)

Here's who we're getting started on:

Who else should we feature? We have room for 12 notables. We can't feature everyone who is nominated, but if we don't feature a profile you work on, we may use it sometime in the future. And, of course, all contributions help improve our shared tree.

Our choice of features will depend partly on the notable person's CC7, i.e. their connection count within seven degrees. The more connections they have, the more likely it is for all WikiTree members to find a close and interesting connection to them. So, if you nominate someone, please help grow their CC7.

Suggestions are more likely to be considered if you provide a link to the person on WikiTree, some information about who they were or why you're nominating them, and if their profile is in good condition with a connection, image, and well-written and well-sourced biography.

We'll make a final decision on which ones to feature early next week.

Please reply here with what you're working on so that we don't duplicate our efforts. Thank you!

Take note that this is not the place to discuss why you think we shouldn't feature someone if those reasons are due to politics, actions, or opinions of those being suggested. Mentioning things like their not being connected, their biography still needing work, erroneous information, etc. are all suitable for discussion here and an opportunity to correct those situations.

Help us choose themes for 2024 Connection Finder themes here.

If I've got the criterion right on my second attempt, it's born in the year 8 modulo 12.

  • Jane Jacobs (1916–2006) America/Canada, writer, sociologist and urban activist, CC7 675
  • Anne Hébert (1916–2000) Canada, author and poet, CC7 4,359, needs image image added.

  • Jeanne Moreau (1928–2017) France, actor, CC7 143
  • Maya Angelou (1928–2014) US, poet and civil rights activist, CC7 49 55
  • Vera Rubin (1928–2016) US, astronomer, CC7 6, not yet connected
  • Dionne Warrick (194x–) US, singer, CC7 127
  • bell hooks (1952–2021) US, author, theorist and social critic, CC7 167.
Thank Russell. As it happens, Jeanne Moreau scrapes in at 23 January 1928, and the rest of my nominees are comfortable.
I'll see if I can add some family to Maya Angelou in the next few days to increase her CC7.
Thank you for this, Katie!
Thanks, Jim!

How about Georgia Congressman and prominent Civil Rights Activist John Robert Lewis, born in 1940. Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, leader of the Selma March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge resulting in the Bloody Sunday incident, as well as far too many other accomplishments to list. Has a CC7 of 362 currently, but needs a more detailed bio.

John Lewis is a great idea!
Love this suggestion, thanks Brian!  I will try to add some basic bio in the next couple of days but if anyone beats me to it that's fine too.
Thanks so much Katie for developing his biography, very well written and certainly hitting some of his most honorable achievements and contributions to society. I added some family of his to bump his CC7 up to 384. Still working to improve it further.
Thanks Brian!  There's so much more that could be added for his accomplishments, but I am vacationing and time limited. If anyone else wants to add or edit the bio please do so, I've just tried to get the basics down.
Thanks, Brian.

Comedian Chris Farley would be good, but his CC7 is low (25)

Baseball player John Barfield would qualify (CC7 448)

Ronan Vibert qualifies, but needs a biography (CC7 206)

Actor Patrick Swayze qualifies (CC7 434)

Superman actor Christopher Reeve would be good (CC7 427)

Aww, Chris Farley. :(

Christopher Reeve would be great for disability representation.
I linked Chris Farley to a couple of other branches, so his count is still low (45), but his connections all improved by 10+ degrees.
I've looked into creating his maternal side, but there's a profile out there that "might" be his mother. Since she's still living, we have to be a bit careful, but if the PM can confirm that the profile is not hers, I'll get it created and at least get grandparents out there, so that the rest of the tree can be built. We might be lucky and other family on the Crosby line may already exist.

To get the ball rolling, here is his maternal grandfather. If we build around him for now, when I get the word about his mother, I'll either connect everything we build to her existing profile, or build a new one and connect whatever branch we create. I did some checking and it does not appear that his Crosby line was ever built, so unless we find another connection in there, this will all be new profiles. Hopefully at some point we'll connect with another part of the tree.

I think that's one of the profiles I was looking at yesterday. Something funky was happening on his family search tree (I think with his mother?). Her listed father had a different last name. I bookmarked it to look into it further when I have more time.
Once we get the answer, there's a cluster of profiles now waiting connection that should add another 8-10 to the number. Maybe more. Hard to say until we make the connection, or if we're able to expand on it a bit more before then.
And it took me awhile to sort through that family. There are some weird things going on with them. I think I've got them sorted on FS, but it's hard to be 100% certain.
No response from PM, so I've created his mother's profile. We can merge later if it ends up proven to be a duplicate. I'll have to give the system time to absorb the new group of profiles before I can see what the CC7 is now.
Looks like it may have gone up to a CC7 of 60 now.
Added more family - up to CC7 76 now.
Thanks, Scott.

Liu Tsong Wong Unconnected Notable, just 9 CC7 . Born in 1905 in Los Angeles, California. Hollywood name Anna May Wong. One of the movies she starred in was 'Daughter of the Dragon' in 1931. She appeared in more than 60 movies, yet suffered from discrimination- she was once passed over for the role of a Chinese woman in favour of a white actress.

Although Anna May Wong was born in 1905 it was January and hence still in the Year of the Dragonsmiley

I've tried connecting her in the past, and it's a hard one! I'll keep trying to find an inroad.
Thanks, Patrick.
