Difference between Southwold township and Southwold, Ontario?

Question

I would like to know the difference between Southwold Ontario and Southwold township Ontario please.  I have lots of family from this area and am puzzled.

Hi Carol-Lynn!

A good tool for this is the Ontario Locator.

From here you can see that Southwold is:

• a dispersed rural community, and also
• a geographic and municipal township

Another way to look at this is by using these maps. Southwold is in Elgin County. You can click on Elgin County which will take you to the County map. Then click on Southwold Township. Click on it again to enlarge. Way up at the top along the northern border you will see the community of ''Southwold Station''.
