Help with Merging Cemeteries

Question

I am unsure how to proceed with the merging of two duplicate cemeteries.

Well I bravely went ahead and added the {{Merge Category|FinalCategoryName}} to the cemetery to be merged. We'll see what happens.

I have updated the template. You should use Rename, not Merge (merge is for transferring text which is not needed).

You also have to use the full category name, like: "Lemberg and District Cemetery, Lemberg, Saskatchewan" (not just "Lemberg and District Cemetery").

But there are two cemeteries. Will a rename just duplicate the existing? How does this work?

No sir, the rename operation will not duplicate the category. They are both technically merge operations , just have different functions since a literal rename is not possible.

Rename = Moves all profiles to the final category and deletes the wrong category (the one which the rename template is on). The final category has to exist for this to work correctly.

Merge = Moves all profiles and tries to combine the text of the category to the final category. This is good when the original category has text content on it, but the new one does not. However, this operation requires a manual intervention by other members.

It might be a good idea if the Help page Steven linked and also this one were enhanced by adding the information he gives here, to explain prominently that in most cases Rename is preferable to Merge, and why.
