Hi,

I need some help tracking down the parents of James Aaron Rawlings (1802–1869) of Virginia and later Kentucky.

Here is what we know about James:

  • He was born on 26 February 1802 in Virginia, according to his headstone and census returns;
  • He married Christianna Fleenor on 26 July 1828 in Washington, Virginia;
  • He had the following children, all in Lee County:
    • Eliza Ann Rawlings, born 1829;
    • Margaret Rawlings, born 1832;
    • Sampson B Rawlings, born 1835;
    • Lafayette Marion Rawlings, born 1837;
    • James F Rawlings, born 1839;
    • Thomas Lincoln Rawlings, born 1844; and
    • Ransom Hopkins Rawlings, born 1847.
  • He died intestate on 3 December 1869 in Clay County, Kentucky, according to his headstone and probate records;
  • His middle inital is attested by his 1860 census return and headstone, however, I have been unable to find a source for his middle name being Aaron; and
  • He is said to be the brother of Harrison Leo Rollins (1798–1855) who in turn was said in his death record to be the son of John and Mary, who according to the FamilySearch global tree were John Rawlings and Mary Abernathy (there is a 1792 marriage record in Sussex to support this); however, I have found no sources showing a relationship between James, Harrison and John.
I am Y-37 match for a known descendant of James at a genetic distance of 2. I am also a Y-111 match for a Rawlings whose earliest known patrilineal ancestor is not given but is said to be a Rawlings who lived in Virginia in the 1800s. We match at a genetic distance of 4 with Y-111 and a distance of 3 with Y-37.
My ancestor Daniel Rawlins alias Butler (1614–1670) of Bromham had at least two sons who moved to Maryland, namely, Aaron Rawlings (1668–1741) of Anne Arundel and Daniel Rawlings (–1726) of Calvert.
I suspect that James is a descendant of Daniel Rawlins alias Butler, probably via his son Aaron. Particularly because I match a greater genetic distance with descendants of my EKA Henry Rawlins alias Butler (1557–1615) of Chittoe than I do with descendants of James.
The question is just finding a paper trail to back that up. Any help in this endavour would be much appreciated!
