What are recommendations on which source to use?

Editors from Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America indicated on two footnotes that Kraher-6 and Rohrmoser-13 were sisters and Kraher-6 was the aunt of Rohrmoser’s two daughters.

An independent researcher found a source naming the parents of a Maria Kraher.  That source is attached to Kraher-6.

Just found an entry in Henry Newman’s Saltzburger Letterbooks that has “ Maria Kroer unmarried Step Daughter to the said Rohrmoser born in Stockham upon Heeth aged 28 Years. N.B. now married to Johannes Mashemer [Mosshamer].” and “ Barbara Rohrmoser No. 22 Expects that her 2 Sisters namely Gertrude married to Andrew Eps a Peasant in Unterholwegen133 and Eva Rohrmoser married to Peter Hirschbichler at Griinwald in Margehn will follow her.”

How do I decide which source to use?  Need help deciding to keep parents attached or disconnect them.

Hi Helen, you might want to add the tags germany and austria to your question

if the question is about her parents, I think that you might want to check with the Germany Project about sources - or did I misread/misunderstand the question?

Lovely profile, by the way!

Added, thank you!

Yes the parents are in question due to the editors 2 footnotes in Detailed Reports….indicating Barbara and Maria were sisters.  Footnotes on Henry Newman’s books indicate Maria was the stepdaughter of Barbara. The content of both books were written in the early 1730’s.  There were a number of Peter Kraher’s at that time and the picture on the profile from an independent researcher is about Peter and Maria….but are they the family on Maria’s profile or is it a different Peter and Maria.  Added Germany and Vienna tags and will check with the Germany Project.  Thanks

This seems her birth record: https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/oesterreich/salzburg/saalfelden/TFBIV/?pg=195.
Peter Kraher was from "Unterstolfern" or "Unterstockern" (although I have not found that place in the surroundings to Saalfelden).
Her godmother was from Kehlbach ("Oberkehlpach"), according to above entry: https://maps.arcanum.com/en/map/cadastral/?bbox=1424740.7173105592%2C6009802.972093104%2C1428713.0541242545%2C6011377.097144351&layers=3%2C4

Why different sources?
She was born 1704 to Peter Kraher and Margaret Grundtner. Her mother Margaret died before 1715 (according to your sources), and the widowed Peter married Barbara Rohrmoser (according to your sources his third marriage on Oct 29, 1715). So Maria Kraher was the step daughter of Barara Rohrmoser at her emigration...

Or am I missing something?

Jochen, Thank you! The map is very detailed and gives me a better idea of locations. Will add your Matricula source to her profile with the same source found on Ancestry. Just to clarify was that her birth or baptismal record or did they baptize right after birth?

Because the editors of two books written in the 1730’s had footnotes with different relationships for Maria, I want to make sure as much research was done as possible to get the relationship correct. (According to two footnotes by editors in the text of Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America Maria was the sister of Barbara.. According to footnotes by editors in Henry Newman’s Saltzburger Letterbooks: “Maria Kroer was the Step Daughter to the said Rohrmoser.)

With what has been found, I believe the editors were in error in the Detailed Reports book and Maria was the step daughter of Barbara.

Thank you for your help!

Just to clarify was that her birth or baptismal record or did they baptize right after birth?

Is is her baptismal record. At that time, there were no birth records. Usually, the child was baptized the same or next day of its birth, or at least a few days later.

Matricula is the main source for Austria (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Sources-Austria).

To further verify the relationship, you should look up the marriage records to find the marriages of Peter Kraher (and the two deaths of his wives). Usually the marriage take place at the brides home parish, but I would start at Saalfelden first to look for. I think I have seen yesterday that there is a easy readable (typewrited) index.

As in your records there are noted the exact dates (of the marriages), I suppose they have been found already, and the genealogist may just failed to note the place (or the source).

When you found the marriage record, it should clearly show the parents of the bride Barbara Rohrmoser.

Thank you very much. I found the index on Ancestry and will search there.  Thank you for your expertise!!!!

Helen,

Have you emailed with the profile manager?  You should not disconnect parents without collaboration with the profile manager.

If I were you, I would put a research notes section == Research Notes == and discuss the two sets of parents and the sources where they are found.

It may be that this will not be solved quickly (like other Salzburger parentage issues) and it will be really nice if the next person who is deeply interested in the profile knows there is a known issue.  You will almost surely need help from someone in Germany/Austria who can find the sources necessary to confirm one set or other of the parents.  It is unlikely the sources are online at the moment -- but maybe they will be in the future.  Adding the Germany and Austria tags as you've done will certainly help.

Kathy, Thank you!  Yes, Judie and I have been in email contact about the profile and the parents in addition to the two comments I posted on the profile. There is already a Research Note section discussing the parents.  In some research last night, additional details were found that will be added to those research notes. Those research notes support the location noted in the attached photo titled Maria Kraher (buried in a note in links, the location of that record was in Saalfelden and must have been from a baptismal record book). Additionally, following your note, a related research section will be added to Barbara. Thanks again.
Excellent. Great work!
