Ellen Janetta Miller was born at Birchington, Thanet Kent in1869.  There is a census record from 1891 of her being in domestic service in Dover, after which I can find no record of census, marriage, or her passing.

Can anyone help with any records?

I searched the 1921 census index on FindmyPast for people named Ellen who were born in Birchington, Kent in the right time-frame and found this one:

Ellen Orders, born 1870 Birchington Kent, living Hornsey, Edmonton, Middlesex.

Thankfully Orders is a pretty unusual last name, and by looking for people in the same household as someone called Ellen Orders I found she was probably with:

Frederick Orders, born 1871 Willesden, Middlesex

Elizabeth Moss, born 1893, Middlesex

I don’t have an on-going subscription to FindmyPast, so I can’t see any more details, like family relationships.

However, I found a death registration for Ellen J Orders aged 83 in 1953 in Islington Registration District, and when I checked it out with the GRO’s index, it was a match with her very unusual middle name:

ORDERS, ELLEN  JANETTA              83

GRO Reference: 1953  J Quarter in ISLINGTON  Volume 05C  Page 778

A quick look for earlier records suggests to me this might have been a second marriage for both of them, and just possibly that Elizabeth Moss was Ellen’s daughter from a previous relationship.

Edited: correct reg district at death was Islington, which bordered Edmonton.

Great sleuthing and reasoning! That looks like a promising lead.

I found that family -- Fredrick and Ellen Orders, plus Elizabeth Moss Preedy -- in the National Registration Transcript Book from Oct 1939, living at Palace View in Hornsey, overlooking Alexandra Park & Palace a couple miles north of Islington. (Ancestry Sharing Link and Permalink.) The record includes birthdates: Fredrick b. 15 Jan 1871; Ellen b. 18 Sep 1869; Elizabeth b. 22 May 1893.

(Edited: Transcript Book is from Oct 1939, not 1839.)

Many thanks for this, It looks as though you have nailed it.

You dont need to subscribe to FindmyPast.  if you access it through RoosSearch, and click on a result, it will open a sign up page.  Scroll down to the bottom of that pageand it ofersyou  one time purchace, depending on the record type from 50np to £2.50.

P.S.  thanks to your advice, I found Ellens first husband David Moss.

Wow, that was quick.  I thought it should be possible to work backwards from her death, but I wasn't expecting to log on today and find fully-sourced profiles for Ellen, both her husbands and her daughter...smiley

Thanks for the heads-up about one-time purchases on FMP.  I'd never scrolled down that far.

No worries.

It took most of the afternoon and evening to sort it out.  I now have to go back in and add stickers and stuff
