Do you have any more information?

Where have you looked?

Is your 8th great grandfather john Musgrove on WT? Or are any of his descendants on WT?

Without a profile and basic information to work from it could be difficult. Do you have sources for John or his descendants?

Hi I only have the information that he was born in Portsmouth in 1660 and that he had a daughter anne musgrove who was born in east Meon in 1698.
Musgrave vs Musgrove is probably a spelling variation, or a difference in how the name was transcribed. 17th century handwriting is often mostly illegible.

How do you know John Musgrove/ Musgrave is your 8th great grandfather?

Do you have records for the generations between you and your great grandparents and further back to the preceding generations?
Hi I have an ancestry account so I have reserched the birth records and marriage records of each generation of my family linage up to john musgrove and they are correct , when I got to john musgrove his suggested father's surname was Musgrave so I wasn't sure if he was the father for john musgrove so I didn't add him as I didn't want to start following the wrong family tree line .
You have a tree on Ancestry?

If you don't mind sharing the tree name I can look at the  sources and check connections to younger generations.. Don't worry about the spelling difference it's very common.
Hi, on ancestry it's the cook/ hillyard family tree ,

Im Melanie jane cook.

Hi Melanie,

I did find your tree on Ancestry, unfortunately it is primarily unsourced other than other unsourced Ancestry trees, with very few actual record sources.

Family trees on other websites are not sources, if the trees have sources attached to them, the sources might be correct for the person, but many times they are not. Especially on websites where it is possible to use another tree as a source, because the people and sources are copied from one or several trees to another without checking for accuracy.

In order to create profiles that would connect you to the John Musgrove family you need to have records that connect each generation starting with you (personal knowledge is okay for you and your parents, though there may be records for your parents and grandparents)  and connecting each person to the next oldest generation.

This is often called being:

Genealogically Defined

You need to have at least one piece of evidence that will lead to the identification of his or her parents, one piece of evidence for each spouse(s), and one piece of evidence for each child."

So, examine your profiles.  Can you check off these as complete?

1. A source that will identify the PARENTS?                           2. Do you have a source for each SPOUSE?                     3. Do you have a source for each CHILD?

Look at these pages:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Reliable_Sources

You will also need to be pre-1700 qualified

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

Another option for learning how to properly source and create profiles for English ancestors is learning through the Orphan Trail at this link.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:England#Orphan_Trail_Team

Family Search has several profiles for some of your ancestors, some are badly sourced, and mostly the profiles are not connected to each of the earlier or later family members.

I hope this helps.

That is why I came unstuck when it came to john musgroves parents as I only ever look at the hints as a guide i only use them if I am 100% certain they are correct, I always look threw the official birth marriage and baptism first to confirm they are for the right person and there were no records for john musgrove and only hints for john Musgrave.
