Looking for children and parentage of Jean Baptiste Petitpas b. ca 1789 Tracadie, NS, d. 1872 Tracadie, NS, and his first wife, Anne Benoit b. ca 1792, d. bet 1824-1826.  I am  interested in confirming with documentation his parentage and that Jean and Anne had a son, Remi/Remy, who would be my 2nd GGF m. Sarah Poirier ca 1846 in D'Escousse.

I added tags and a link to Jean-Baptiste's profile for more visibility. Unfortunately, I couldn't find reliable sources for him.

I think we need a bit more info to start. I've had a look at the census records, but he doesn't appear in any of them. How do you know that he was born and died in Tracadie, NS? Are you sure it is the right location? There is also a Tracadie in New Brunswick.

His death record from 1872 states he died in Tracadie, Antigonish County, NS. His parents are listed as Jean Baptiste and Marthe Madeleine Bonnevie.

The senior Jean I am uncertain of his place of berth. I believe it may be possible that Jean Jr was born in D'Escousse as the family seemed to move between Tracadie and D'Escousse.

In the 1827 census, Tracadie, Antigonish, there are three Jean Petitpas as heads of families.  I believe the one with 10 in the family is the Jean m. Anne Benoit as the number of children would be close. Anne died between 1824-1826 as Jean married Adelaide Charpentier in 1826.

In the 1838 census, Tracadie, Antigonish, I believe we see Jean, Adelaide and then a mix of children from both families.

In the 1871 census Tracadie, Antigonish, I believe the John Petipas, 82 is the man I am looking for and living with Lewis Petipas 25 and Moriah Petipas 62  He is the only Jean/John Petipas in NS that I can find and the following year, 1872, he died in Tracadie.

That is about what I have found to date on Jean and Anne Benoit.  I have not, as yet, found a record of the children's names to confirm Remi as their son. I did find a record for Charlotte, their daughter, which states her parents names.

I thank you for looking into this and appreciate your efforts.

Thom

Hi Thom,

I think there is someone else also working on this profile:

I looked at the 1871 census again, but that 82-year=old John Petipas appears to be married to the 62-year-old Mariah above. So, not Adelaide, unless he married a third time.

I think he is also the John Petipus (!) who shows up as head of household in the 1861 census, https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1861/Pages/item.aspx?itemid=704325 but oddly, I can't find him in the census records themselves. At that time, Tracadie was in Sydney County.

There is a death registration for John B. Petipas at Nova Scotia Archives, but it states that his parents are not known. https://archives.novascotia.ca/vital-statistics/death/?ID=3394 It does say that he is married, unfortunately not to whom. Do you have access to the actual death certificate?

A Remi Petipas is listed in Hutchinson’s Nova Scotia Directory, 1864-1865 as a farmer in D'Escousse.

I think that is the Remi Petitpas who married Adelaide L'Avandier in Guysborough in 1872. The marriage registration states that he is from Tracadie, but his father is Joseph Petitpas, not John or Jean. https://archives.novascotia.ca/vital-statistics/marriage/?ID=33596

The Acadians Project also has done a lot of work on the Petitpas in Nova Scotia: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Petitpas-15

This may also be worth looking at: https://pioneerfamiliesofhavreboucher.ca/family/petitpas/ Unfortunately, there are no sources listed.
