Site maintenance last week

WikiTreers,

Last week we updated our server operating system and programming language. This was necessary to keep the site stable and secure, and to enable some performance enhancements.

We need to ask for your help and patience.

The update is complete, but there are some remaining issues around the site. For example, there is a problem with categorization. There are probably other bugs we have not spotted.

If you spot any sort of problem, please report it here by clicking the answer button. (To keep things organized, comments at the top will be hidden or moved once read.)

Thanks for understanding. This community is special and your work here is important. Our job is to make sure you have a stable and secure platform.

Almost immediately I noticed the Profile Header is superimposed after reloading.  Might be a problem with other pages as well.

Hi Hal. Are you using the WikiTree Browser Extension? As Ian noted on a separate answer, that could be the culprit. If you're not using the WBE please let us know and we'll investigate further. Thanks!

Yes, I am using WBE, so consistent with Ian.  BTW, really enjoy the functionality of WikiTree Browser Extension.  Makes profile creation and maintenance a breeze...and, I actually look organized and smart.  Which I am neither. Thank you.

Some image overlap when adding profiles (added Brisson-752). Still able to add profile but disconcerting. (I am working on iPad.)

Jamie, I notice that Douglas is using the WikiTree Sourcer. Douglas, are you also using the WikiTree Browser Extension? If so, does the problem happen if you disable those extensions?

All of the G2G buttons are huge, the one in header of this page and all here: Help:Connect-a-Thon. Still does it with all extensions turned off...

Thanks Chris & all for all you do for us TreeDwellers. My sticky header at the top of the page has a see-through background.

Added to that, it also covers up the top of the page down to the lock icon where you can't see the name of the person on the profile. & the stickers in the Bios are huge.

Hi Pat. I think the Sticky Header in the browser extension will cause display problems until we remove the extra banner in the header.

This is fun.  We just merged Salisbury-1765 into Salisbury-777.  When I used the connection finder, it shows William Salisbury as his own husband. 

Bug finding is SO much fun.  Thanks for building this great platform.

Bug:"Delete Old Bio" button only removes itself when Enhanced Editor is called after "Preview".

Updating [[Bovee-224|Gertrude L. Bovee (1881-1883)]]

Steps to reproduce:

1. Select "Auto Bio"

2. Select "Preview"

4. Select "Turn on Enhanced Editor"

5. Select "Delete Old Bio"

Unexpected result:  Old bio is not deleted.  "Delete Old Bio" button is removed.

Workaround: Delete old bio by hand.

Just saw this on a profile, but not sure if it's an issue with the upgrade or one that just managed to pop up at the same time.

It shows the profile managers as:

Profile managers: Notables Project WikiTree [send private message], < a i=6>Danielle Liard [send private message], and Stanley Baraboo [send private message]    

That odd <a i=6> looks out of place.

I'm not seeing the "<a i=6>" when I look at the profile.

What browser and device are you using? Do you have any browser extensions installed?

Ah - it appears to be gone now. When I look at the same profile now, it shows:

Profile managers: Danielle Liard [send private message], Notable Project WikiTree [send private message], and Stanley Baraboo [send private message]    

Hopefully it was just a momentary issue. I am using a Windows 11 laptop, using the Chrome browser, and I have the WikiTree X, WikiTree Browser Extension, Norton Safe Web, Norton Password Manager, and DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials.

Is it only particular profiles? Where is it showing on the profile page?

I saw that on a profile repeatedly last night.  Hovering over the profile link, it was fine, but when I clicked on the link to go to the profile, it said the above.  Refreshing the page, it gave the same message, then all of a sudden it worked.  Other profiles were fine.  I never saw it again.

Today, the system is worthless to use because of the slowness.

I saw this on every profile I tried to look at, most of which (or maybe all of which) were profiles I had visited recently. This error message was the only thing that appeared on the screen. After a little while, everything went back to normal.

And, as Linda says, earlier today WikiTree and G2G were very slow, and often timed out...

On my Anniversaries list, everyone is listed as my 7th great grandmother or 7th great grandfather.  For example: Haywood-43 is listed as my 7th great grandfather, even though he is actually my grandfather! and the initials after him (which I presume to be the path to the relationship between us) is listed as FF, when he is actually my father's father.

Now my (deceased) MOTHER is showing as my 7th great grandfather! Not on her profile, but on the Anniversaries list.

My mother is still showing as my 7th great grandFATHER on my Anniversaries list (2 days now).  She shows as my mother on her profile.

I think the relationships in the Anniversaries list are a feature added by the WikiTree Browser Extension (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Browser_Extension#Anniversaries_Table). You could try turning off that feature and then turning it back on again to see if that helps. If that doesn't fix it then maybe you could send a message to the developer (Ian Beacall) to let him know there is an issue. (Just for information, I tried turning the feature on to test it and it displays the relationships correctly for me)

Thanks for replying, Paul.  I shall have to message Ian, because I tried switching it off and then on at your suggestion, but it didn't change anything.  My mother is still my 7th great grandfather.

Are you all doing something this Friday morning? I'm typing this at 6:02 eastern US. Chrome on ipad. No extensions.

• Loading of pages is REALLY slow
• I was on https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Sheppard-221 And clicked on Help:G2G; it thought about it for several seconds, then stopped, remaining on Sheppard-221.

I am seeing the same issue.  Most recent windows OS, with the only extension I have being Sourcer, and I was not using it.

I tested trying to get to g2g (from the Help menu) from another profile-- McGee-4471-- and had the same experience. After thinking about it for several seconds, it simply stops, leaving me on the profile page.

I have to manually enter www.wikitree.com/g2g/ into the URL field of my browser to get to g2g.

I am currently trying to do my Ranger shift and the site is very slow and sometimes not loading at all.

For info, I use Safari on my iPad, I do have the Sourcer app installed, but it was working fine.

The site is running incredibly slowly this morning (Friday 15th).  Pages take several seconds to load.  This is not helpful for execution of Ranger duties.  Several people have complained about this.

When I tried to edit a profile, it crashed my browser.

The responsiveness of opening a web page upon clicking a button is strongly reduced after the update. Sometimes it opens after more than a minute. This was not so before the update.
