Hi WikiTreers!

Hacktoberfest has been going on this month and participants have been busy adding to the Tree Apps and the WikiTree Browser Extension projects on GitHub!

A big thanks to everyone participating! (If I left out what you're doing; post below or we'll get it in next week's update.)

Participants can communicate with others in these places:

  • G2G - I will make a weekly post (like this one) where you can ask any questions or give updates on what you've been doing. You can also use G2G to ask other WikiTreers for feedback on what you are working on.
  • Discord - If you register and therefore have your Hacktoberfest badge, you will have access to the #hacktoberfest channel on the WikiTree Discord Server.
  • WikiTree Apps Google Group - Any question you ask here will go out to the members of the WikiTree Apps Project.
  • GitHub - The Issues section of the repositories have a few discussions going on.

Need ideas on what to work on?

Is there some sort of chart or report that has helped you with your genealogy research? Perhaps you could add it as a new Tree App.

Is there some feature you wish was added to the WikiTree site, or do you wish the layout of some page was different? You could probably add it as a feature to the browser extension.

People have been making suggestions on what features they would like to see in this G2G post.

You can also check the issues pages on GitHub to see what needs to be worked on.

Still have no idea where to start?

Let me know, and I'll work with you to find something appropriate for your experience and skill level.

For those who want to participate but haven't signed up yet, you can register for Hacktoberfest here

For those who want to know what we've been working on but aren't participating, there is going to be a Live Chat on Thursday October 12th at 1pm Eastern (5pm UTC).

Go hackers, go! Looking forward to all the great things you are producing as a community. Sorry I can't join you. I'm still trying to combine teaching with a normal life and some fun in between.

I have also been working on 2 new features of the CC7 app:

  1. An option to run Bio Check on the profiles as they are being retrieved and flag the ones with issues. By clicking on this flag, a report of the issues is displayed in a pop-up.
  2. [I am not sure how useful this one would be.]  A way of specifying only a subset of the profiles to be displayed:
    • All,
    • Only ancestors of the "central" person,
    • Only descendants,
    • Only people "above" the central person,
    • Only people "below" the central person.

Where:

Above is anyone that can be reached by first following a parent link from the central person, as long as they are not in the Below group. After the first link, any link can be followed.

Below is anyone that can be reached by first following any link except a parent link from the central person. If someone can be reached by both a parent link and any of the other links, they are placed in the Below group if they are the same age or younger than the central person. Otherwise they are in the Above group.

I have been using this and finding it useful to ensure my connections within the CC7 are correctly formatted and have a source.

I found a bug in WBE Auto-Bio that I was going to see if I could fix. While I've worked on websites before, I've never worked on browser extensions before, so I'm still trying to figure out how to debug an extension. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Miyako!

Aleš was planning on showing people how to do exactly this in the live cast tomorrow:

I have an idea for the livecast: I could demonstrate how to program and use the debbuging tools and github in WBE developmnet. Maybe someone will see something new.

If you can't watch it live, it will be saved on YouTube.

I saw it and it was helpful. Thanks, Aleš.

Not sure if working on BEE counts, but I added Italian cemetery category creation from Find a Grave and improved state recognition for German location category creation from Wikipedia by using coordinates additionally to scanning the article intro.
