Does R. Bolling Batte, Virginia genealogist, actually have a Bolling ancestor?

R. Bolling Batte is a fairly famous Virginia genealogist, mostly known for his R. BOLLING BATTE PAPERS — BIOGRAPHICAL CARD FILE.  I was curious to see his relationship to the original Robert Bolling, husband of the granddaughter of Pocahontas.

However, I was surprised to find no apparent direct relationship to Robert Bolling!  R. Bolling Batte is related to just about every other Virginia family of note, but no direct relationship to Robert Bolling, except by marriage.  Did I miss something?

I don't know, but I don't think it matters.

LOL! Maybe it's a genealogical joke meant to confuse and confound!  Anyway, enjoy your turkey today, if partaking.
I have a distant cousin named Kosciuszko. He came from a military family. Like presidents names are used to name children, well known monikers were included in names.  Before presidents, Bolling would have been well known name. Once it was used it becomes a family name.
True.  It's just pretty funny since the guy is directly descended from just about EVERYONE else, EXCEPT a Bolling!

Happy turkey day!
George Smith Patton Jr, I can't find a Smith in the mix but, there is one somewhere.
And they did 3 generations of Smith Pattons!
Early Patton's are not well documented. Gen Patton is identified as Jr, his son is IV, what are we missing, go figure. I know he connects to Taylor's and Thornton's of the 1700's. My 2nd gr grandpa's middle name was Tebbs, presumed to be named after his sisters-in-law husband's family. After adding several family members I discovered, Tebbs married into the Taylor family two generations prior to the Smith Taylor connection. Maybe R Bolling Batte is a similar case.  Francis S Fitzgerald, aka F Scott Fitzgerald, wanted some anonymity from uncle or cousin, Francis Scott Key, so he tweaked his name. I bet mom still called him Francis.

Have I been hiding under a rock and just don’t remember, cause I have a couple of Bollings and a crapton of Battes in my family but I don’t recall coming across R Bolling Batte?

ETA: You and I are 9C through Robert Bolling and Anne Cocke. I haven’t done a lot of research on the Bollings. Surprisingly, they are on my mom’s side of the family but the Batte’s are on my dad’s.

I must admit, I didn't know cousin Virgie was your Great Aunt until today. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks.  Actually, there are plenty of unknowns in R.'s tree. An unknown wife here or there could have been a Bolling.

Who knows?  That may have been R.'s inspiration for getting into genealogy.  Finding that Bolling!

Stuffed now with turkey.  Hope everyone is the same!
