Hi Wikitreers,

We have a veteran of the 106th New York Infantry Regiment Company C who has conflicting data. I have researched in collaboration many of the veterans of the regiment but he is the first so far I’ve come across with this kind of confliction of data.

We have this wonderful source provided by civilwar data see Here which states “He was discharged for disability on 7/9/1864 at Monocacy, MD”

However here is where the story gets interesting as Roster shows he was “ killed in action, July 9, 1864, at, Monocacy, Md.”

I also will point out there is another man with the same name Michael Bresett (1842 - 1932) who served in same company referred to as #2 respectively see also Civilwardata

Maybe someone can explain this better as I’m still trying to figure it out…

Thank you

I placed a couple sources, under the sources section. Both show he died in battle.
I agree he died in battle more sources show he did than he didn’t it appears

Civilwardata cites the "Report of the Adjutant General 1893-1906"  which is the original published source of the rosters at the New York Military Museum's site.  I would guess that it's a mistranscription.

That is my assumption as well. I can’t find any other source supporting that fact yet. yes

"killed in action at Monocacy July 9, 1864." Adjutant General statement dated 28 Jan 1865  item 148 in Approved Pension Application File for Catharine Bresett, Minor Child of Michael Bresett, Company C, 106th New York Infantry Regiment (Application No. WC85355) https://catalog.archives.gov/id/80791493 item 123 identifies the 2 separate and distinct soldiers named Michael Bresett 153 pages - mentions dozens of relatives

This is a great source. Thank you yes

Both veterans are definitely two separate individuals

Andrew, I have the complete multi page file of the Widow's application for pension. It was filed with the Minor's application. States very clearly that he was killed in action. Also in 1910 there was a question raised about two separate Michael Bresetts. Question was answered differentiating the two individuals. I can email you the documents from Fold3 if you're interested.
