Y-DNA Haplogroup R-YP658 Project: Categorization

I created a new project for this haplogroup in September as a research home for the FTDNA project by the same name.  I am still plodding through documenting the various matching lines, but I think I have enough there now to ask for the creation of a new subcategory nested properly under Y-DNA Haplogroup R-M198.

I am also interested in adding haplogroup tags to the profiles of documented ancestors, but I don't think that is currently an available option for such projects...?

Thanks,

David

Anyone? Bueller?
I like what you have done on the R-YP658 and Martin Projects. I don't have an answer to your question as I was wanting to add haplogroup tags from BigY testers to the Campbell profiles. So I hope we catch the right person's attention. Right now I resorting to putting the BigY sticker on the EKA. But it would be nice if we could build a haplotree/block tree using tags or categories where it would show the relationships between the haplogroups. Hi Kevin,

I was not aware that sticker existed.  It is better than nothing, but I agree with you.  The sticker is not currently helpful to folks who don't already know how to find more information on the identified haplopgroup...

Hi David,

I don't know much about Haplogroup Projects, so I'm afraid I can't comment directly on your question, but I'm hoping you might be able to help me.  I administer the Petty Project at FTDNA, and the major (by far!) haplogroup lineage in the Project is I-BY34474, a distant subclade of I-M253 which is associated with a 17th century English immigrant to America, Hubert Petty (Petty-7).  This line currently includes over two dozen of our Petty Project members, who have a total of 11 different identified subclades of BY34474 between them, in 4 "levels." (Unfortunately, I've only been able to talk three of these members into joining WikiTree.)  I'm considering creating a new FTDNA Haplogroup Project for this specific lineage, but don't know if there would be any real advantage to that.  As a Haplogroup Project Admin, can you offer any advice on that?

Thanks,

Hi Bob,

If you're already the admin of a surname project with only 114 members that already includes all of the members you are considering for a haplogroup project, it might not be worthwhile.  I already managed a few surname projects and had no bandwidth to volunteer for duty in the 1054-member Martin project, so I created a separate, much smaller and more focused haplogroup project with different goals.

I think there might be different tools available to haplogroup projects in the future, but at the moment we have only those tools that are already available to all surname projects.  If I were you, I'd probably hold off unless you want to create a separate haplogroup project and hand it over to a different admin.

VR,

David

Thanks David, sounds like good advice.  I’ll hold off for now.
