What is wrong with these 2 birth sources from WikiTree Sourcer?

I've added one of my great great grandfathers today, George Edward Cookson SMITH (Smith-322824), and pulled a couple of sources from Ancestry and irishgenealogy.ie using the WikiTree Sourcer extension in Firefox (today is the first time I've used it). But when I look at the profile, these sources aren't showing. The other sources I added manually appear fine. I figure there's something wrong in the text, but I can't spot it. Can anyone help with this, please?

If you enclose the citations in ref codes (<ref>citation</ref>), you need to place the citations in the Biography section, not in the Sources section.

Alternately, you can remove the ref codes and leave the citations in the Sources section. Using this method, be sure to place an asterisk before each citation, as Rick mentions in his answer.
Thanks Lindy, that did it. :-)

Don't know if this is it, but I believe there should be a * before the text of a reference, thus the first example it is in the wrong place (before the ref) when it should be just before the "Ireland... On the 2nd example, it should be just before the "Civil....

Thanks Rick, you and Lindy have solved the problem for me. Great stuff! :-)

Ancestry does not share a record publicly. Thus, since most can't view it, they make a terrible reference.

The Irishgenealogy sends me to their site.

Ancestry does share records with a share link, Sourcer inserts that link into the source citation
Is it not limited to paid subscribers?
To generate the citation with a sharing link you need to be a subscriber as far as I know, after it's posted on Wikitree then anyone can click on the link and view the record/image.

If Ancestry is offering free record access as they do sometimes, hopefully  anyone can generate the sharing link, I've got a sub so can't test for free features.

The reference is perfectly valid.

A citation should  tell you what type of  record it  is, what it records (date, event location etc) and where the record is to be found. These do exactly that . They are good references.

In the first  case, the citation  tells us that the information was found on Ancestry but  originally came from a Family Search film. It tells you who the record concerns,  the date of the event and where it took place. In this case you could actually use the info and find the record on  Family Search  (It took me about a minute and I don't have any familiarity with Irish genealogy ) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPTR-Z2B

The second to  Irishgenealogy also gives  all the information necessary to find the record on the Irish government website. I haven't  used that site but could perform my own search.  On many  sites,  it isn't possible to link directly to individual records.  (And even if you can the links may not stable and eventually stop working).

Direct links are an added extra, nice if available ( as mentioned Ancestry does now have a sharing link; though not on all records.) However, there are many digitised  records  and journals that  are only hosted on one site and only  viewable by subscribers  to that site .There are many more records in archives around the world  that aren't digitised at all .

The problem was it was the wrong format for placing in sources, it was the format for going in Bio, nothing wrong with the contents nor did I suggest that there was anything wrong with that part of it.
I assume that the Ancestry sharing link is limited to subscribers, this is an example of a profile with a sharing link :-

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goddard-6367

I did try out their trial subscription so i can sign in but all i get is a washed out version of the record, and when i click on 'View full record' - i am redirected to a subscription page.

Is there anyone without a subscription who can get to a readable sharing image?.

[Edit] -  It would appear that it depends upon the type of record that is being shared :-

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dale-2165

clicking on the sharing link and then 'View full record' does bring up extra details including the source citation, only when you click on the image does it take you to a subscription page.

Allan, to get to a readable sharing image from an Ancestry Sharing link if you don't have an Ancestry subscription, try the following:

1. Right-click on the image and select "Open image in new tab"

2. In the address bar of the new tab, go to the end and delete the bit that says "&maxWidth=520" then press the return/enter key

That should bring up a full-size, zoomable version of the image.

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion - it worked just as you say.
If you have the Sourcer extension, then when on an Ancestry sharing image page, there is a menu item on the Sourcer Popup that says "Go to Fullsize Image Sharing Page". This will show you the full size image without having to do the "Open image in new tab" and edit the URL.
Hi Rob,

Thanks for that, it works as you say it will.

Have you been able to make any progress with the FmP 'Save Person Data' problem?.

<ref> and </ref>, the opening and closing inline citation tags belong in the bio section, either delete them, or move the entire text in your question into the Bio section, so:

On the Sourcer popup menu there are three items to build citations:

  • Build Inline Citation
  • Build Narrative with Citation
  • Build Source Citation

It looks like you did "Build Inline Citation" but then pasted the result after the <references/> line.

It looks like you partially fixed it by removing the ref tags. But it still doesn't look quite right because there are newlines in the citation. This disrupts the list. If you want to put the citation after the references line you should use "Build Source Citation". This automatically puts the * on the start and avoids any newlines.

For this particular profile, since there is no real biography I would recommend using "Build Narrative with Citation" and pasting the result before the == Sources == line, this would give you the start of a narrative biography.

I did try to make this a bit clearer a few releases ago. When you do "Build Inline Citation" the popup displays:

That's really helpful, thanks Rob. I added those sources as I was creating the new person. I'm going to go back and redo them now. :-)
