A lot of the connected families living in Vermont, especially right after the Revolutionary War moved to New York. Beginning in the Eastern half of the state and then drifted across the state to the south western side, particularly in Tioga county. Many of the families from Rhode Island moved to either Massachusetts or Vermont, and then moved to New York. My great grandfather left Tioga County and settled in south central Illinois around 1880. and like you my grandfather thought that his father and grandfather were born in New York, when in truth, his grandfather was born in Vermont, and his great grandfather was born in Rhode Island. Oral traditions had my great grandfather being born in England and settling in Canada, before moving to Illinois. I know that some of the family in Vermont during the Revolutionary War were Tories who fled to Canada, and others left the US after the war to Canada, but my line stayed in Vermont and along with three or more other families moved to eastern New York before finally settling in south western New York. Oral tradition had me confused for over ten years until I found a marriage license and a church document listing my grandfather’s marriage and another license for my great grandfather’s marriage which connected me to the rest of the family in New York, Vermont, and Rhode Island. BTW, I have two Eldred’s who married into my family. ELIZABETH ELDRED 1773-1826, and WAITE ELDRED 1776-1850.
