Note that I have found a (different) George A. Williams - there is an interesting (but barely legible) note on his registration form, and it seems to me (as a rank beginner) strange that he seems to have signed up for five years but to have been discharged only a few weeks later! Maybe someone would be interested in pursuing that lead (I don't think he is "our" George Williams of the 106th)

(16). (All members of family and their parents born in New York)[16] Occupation suggests that this may be the blue-eyed, brown-haired, fair-skinned George Williams (22, "Brickmoulder") [b. between 12 Feb 1825 and Feb 11 1826] who enlisted for 5 years on Feb. 12 1847 in New York, discharged 27 Feb of the same year (!), Remark "At Ft. Columbus... [illegible].[17]
