How do you remove the primary/background image attached to the profile?

Is there a way to remove or 'hide' the primary/background image; not remove the primary/background image from the profile, but the icon?

Primary images will remain on the sidebar unless removed totally from a profile, which will mean the image will be removed from the database totally after a set number of days unless it is also attached to another profile or page.
Background images can be removed from the side bar — but will remain as the background image — by removing the profile from the image.  Again, however, if the profile you are removing is the only profile or page where the image is used, it will automatically be removed from the system after a set number of days.
An example of what I am trying to explain can be seen here:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tait-2304

If this is not what you meant, please respond and explain in more detail what it is you are wanting.
I'm pretty sure she means keep the primary image and the background, but remove them from the right-hand side column.
In your example you provide, the background 'icon' does not show up on the profile, and that's what I want to get rid of. Not the background, but the big square sample or icon or whatever it is? Thank you.

In order to do that, you will need to go to the image page, scroll down to where it says "People & Things in the Image:" underneath which will be the profile (or profiles, if the image is background to more than one person or page) ID#.
Click the check box for the profile next to where it says "REMOVE from image", then scroll down and save.

Warning, if the image is only on the one profile, you will need to add it to another profile or space page, or it will be deleted from the system and will no longer show as the background.  If this is the case, and you do not have a space page, or another profile using the image, feel free to add Space:NoDoubleVision to the image in that section of the image page (the People & Things in the Image: part) where it says "Add a person or thing:".  Again, scroll down and save after adding the new profile or page.

If you have any trouble following the "how to" do this, feel free to contact me.  If it is an open profile, I am more than happy to assist by doing it - or by attempting to clarify the step-by-step process. smiley

Hi Cousin Kimberly! 16th cousin three times removed

I did this once, it was a lot of trouble for nothing, because non WikiTree members do not see the pictures on the right hand side.  But, that being said, if you don't like the pictures showing up on the right side, then you have to create several blank pictures, all white, name them blank 1, blank 2,  blank 3, blank 4.

You have to upload those blank pictures first, then add the profile picture.   Then select the picture you want as the primary picture and "click the box" then click "set primary" then save changes. Then you could up load another picture and select it as the background.

So, if you already have pictures uploaded, you can't change the order of the pictures and put the blank ones in front of the others.  You would have to remove all pictures from the profile first, upload the balnks, then reload the pictures you want!

I think you have to upload about 4 blank pictures first so that the rest of the pictures fall below and one has to click on "View All" to see the rest of the pictures.

Nonmembers of WikiTree do in fact see the images  the right side of the page.

Ellen, when I go to my profile and click on "public view" this message pops up:

This is approximately what members outside the Trusted List see at <https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Draper-4171>.

And I don't see any of my pictures on the sidebar!  surprise

Non-members only see the images on green or open lock profiles.  They will not see images on Member profiles because our privacy level is too high.

On the edit screen for the profile there is an "Edit Photo Settings" section above the "Edit Text" section. There are checboxes to remove primary image or remove background image. These checkboxes will change the way the images appear on the profile, but they will not remove them from the righthand column.

Clicking those checkboxes will remove the image(s) from the profile.
There is no way to remove a primary image from the side bar of a person profile.  It is the only image that will always be there, no matter what is done to accommodate any other images uploaded.  (Well, outside Mr Draper's convoluted example - which I do not recommend as WT would soon be full of white images that will show to anyone using non-white internet pages.)
Those checkboxes only remove the image from the primary photo slot or the background slot. They do not remove the image from WikiTree, nor from the profile (assuming the image was connected to the profile).

I have frequently ticked the "remove from primary image" box, and I have never seen it affect the display of the image on the right-hand side of the profile.

The primary image is the one that appears in thumbnail form at the upper left corner of the profile. The first image uploaded to a profile is automatically designated as "primary." Images also can be connected to a profile by adding the profile ID to the image, and a connected image can be designated as primary by ticking a box on the image page. The "primary" designation of an image can be removed from a profile using the checkbox on the profile edit page -- that removes the image from the thumbnail box at the upper left, but it does not remove the connection between the image and the profile. (Yes, the conflicting procedures for designating and undesignating primary images are confusing.)

The "primary" designation does not affect the sequence in which images appear on the right-hand side of the profile. That is determined by the date the images were uploaded (oldest first). For an example of this, see the profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cowden-620 (my great-aunt). The top image on the right-hand side is not the primary image, but rather the one that was uploaded first.

I think any possible confusion comes from my having only removed the background image on profiles where the image itself is on another profile or page.  If you enter edit mode on the profile, then click to remove the background image, it is gone completely from that profile.
The same is not true of the primary image, which does - as Ellen explained - remain on the side bar even when removed as the thumbnail at the top left of the page.

Any image that was uploaded to a particular profile, and is only in use on that one profile, will remain on the side bar even if no longer set to primary or background.  (To remove the image from the side bar, and retain it as the background, my earlier explanation comes into play.  A primary image, once removed, may remain on the side bar, but will not remain as primary image.  The primary image is the only image that cannot be "housed" on another profile or page and still remain as primary on one where it was removed by any method.)
