Do you have questions related to genealogical research in Germany? Do you want to help others by answering such questions?

Join the Germany Project and the German Stammtisch on with another Germany Research party on WikiTree Day, where you have the chance to ask your research, brick-wall or WikiTree questions and we'll try answering them - live, together and on-screen.

In order for fair treatment of all people asking questions (and also to make this just a little more German ;)), we kindly ask you to:

  1. Make sure the profile of the person you want to ask a question about is complete. It should contain everything you know about the person, all sources you have, all research dead-ends you found and all of your theories about the person.
  2. Read the guide on How to break down your German immigrant brick wall and ask yourself if that one doesn't get you far enough, for the moment.
  3. Reply (instead of commenting) to this post with the profile and the precise question you're trying to answer. The chronological order of replies will help to determine the order of answering - first come, first serve ;)
  4. Join the meeting and watch us research other people's questions while you wait for your turn. Maybe the hints presented there, might help you as well. Also feel free to ask questions about the research methods and sources presented.

If you have no questions, feel free to join and listen or contribute with your knowledge as well.

The zoom meeting will be on Saturday, 4 November 2023, at 14:00 German Time. Check out the time zone overview for your time zone.

Hopefully until then the meeting link will also be on the Help:WikiTree Symposium Schedule

Update: it won't, but it's on Help:WikiTree_Day/Research_Parties

Thank you for the invite and the links Florian. I've wanted to work on my German side for a long time. At the very least, I will be watching the party to learn some basics on approaching this. Thanks for including the links too.

I have a major writing project in November for which I'll need freedom from most other mental distractions, i.e. will be on leave of absence from WT from 31 Oct to 2 Dec. Sorry to be missing out on all the fun during next month!

P.S.: That also goes for the Stammtisch ... :(

I would like to know the parents of this ancestor - I have many possibilities in the notes section of his bio.

I would love some help with my ancestor John Dorn who immigrated to Ohio. I have the records that I can find and I have added quite a bit of research notes to possible connections before he left Germany. My mother does have her atDNA tested. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dorn-1014

If this question is chosen I do have a little bit of research on the 5 other Dorn men who were naturalized in Dayton, Ohio, United States around the same time. They are all grouped together as siblings on an ancestry tree but no relation is known or suspected between any of them. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/1157944/person/-905871944/facts

A new record to me has come to light. I am pretty sure that the father of the John Dorn I asked about is a Francis Dorn born about 1791 in Germany. He was listed in the 1850 Montgomery County, Ohio, United States census living next door to my John. John is listed in a deed upon the death of Francis in 1860. The next question is the German connection of Francis Dorn.

Here is one.  I don't have much on it but word of mouth.  The reference on freespace, I will need to open up the permissions on it if you choose to chase this one.

About 6 months ago, you helped me with the profile of Martin Fensel (Fensel-2) and was able to find the full names of his parents, his missing siblings, the towns/villages where the family lived, and article of their emigration in a German newspaper.

This time, I would like to concentrate on the family of his wife, Anna Margarethe Amm.  I know she was born and married Martin Fensel in Bayern but not sure where.  The name distribution map shows surname Amm around Nuremberg, close to where the Fensel family lived around Neustadt an der Aisch.  I would love to know the names of her parents and possible siblings and the names of the towns/villages where she lived and married.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Amm-104

I have an Ancestor that we have been looking for since about 1951.

Johann F Lang - WikiTree Profile

My line is down:
Charles Frederick Lang - WikiTree Profile

Problem is that he was born in transit across the ocean.

I have DNA matches through his brother, whom was born in Germany:

I was working backwards on one of my lines and ran across this one that says it is my 6th great grandfather Emert-64.  It does not seem to have any kind of sources that I can find.  I tried looking at Ancestry and Family Search specifically but I am not qualified to work on pre 1700 profiles, know absolutely nothing about them nor do I have access to any foreign sources unless they are online and available for free.  I am not sure if you all would have time to even look at this profile but if you do please know that I very much appreciate it.

I hope to attend. I would love to verify what little we know about Johann Georg Benfer (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Benfer-149) and learn more. His son of the same name emigrated to Philadelphia in 1766.

I'm brickwalled on Lorenz Melzig and his wife Anna Pauline. The only direct source I have for them is in their son's marriage record.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Melzig-3

I assume they are from Kanth, Silesia, Prussia like their son.
