Chaplain William Henry Waggoner (1812 - 1893) served 6 Months

Hi Wikitreers,

I find that the chaplains who served during the U.S. Civil War very interesting. In the case of this veteran he was 50 years of age when enlisting as a chaplain of the glorious 106th New York Infantry Regiment. I have placed him on the free space page for the regiment under Field and Staff

I’d like collaboration in learning more about this gentleman. Where did he attend school? Was he in fact an ordained minister? Anything about him that would be of interest during his 6 months. He enlisted for 3 years on August 27, 1862 but apparently was discharged February 3, 1863 at Washington, D.C. Why did he not complete the 3 years of enlistment? Did he receive a wound during one of the many battles the 106th NYV engaged?

Any collaboration in his genealogy is appreciated

Let’s get these veterans connected laugh

Thank you

Notes: Is there a category for U.S. Civil War Chaplains?

He was discharged due to Special Order No. 55 issued by the Adjutant General's Office, War Department, Washington DC. Unfortunately I have been unable to find that text of that special order.

Info comes from:

Oh, and that document also lists him as being born in Palatine, NY, aged 50 years, occupation clergyman.
In 1847, he was working as a Universalist pastor in Troy, New York.

At the time of the 1860 Census, he was working as a Universalist pastor at a church in Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

Thank you Matt

The special order numbers always intrigues me I’ve seen different types and g2g did help clarify the definition in one posting.

One step closer to understanding this veteran better as now we know he was a Universalist minister and his birth place also being confirmed.

He obviously was ordained even mentioned in the article a good source yes
