CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

The last generation, that's like the top piece of bread in the sandwich.
My husband and I just finished The Pacific for the first time, I think it may have been even better than Band of Brothers, which I thoroughly enjoyed! Can't wait to read the books that inspired it. Hope you keep finding time to do things you want to do in recovery.
My brain is 20 years old, Pip. Condolences on your loss.

Glad your therapy is going well!!

Sorry to hear about your uncle, Pip. crying

No, you should not make it a regular thing, at least not until I get my head screwed back on straight from the last time you were on the morning crew show & blew my mind. Here I was expecting Topper & what I saw was Fess Parker, BTL; still trying to straighten my head! LOL!

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your Uncle Buddy & understand your "Whaa..." revelation. The death of my sisters ex-husband was the catalist that brought me to WikiTree in June. I will have to get your Uncle Buddy's book “Profile of a Successful Entrepreneur” & read it, it's sounds interesting. smiley

Well done with your recovery Pip!

Myself and my 6 siblings, and my 5 cousins are the only ones in our generation. My parents only had 1 sibling each which results in a small group of cousins,

The next generation my cousins has a total of 8 children between 5 of them, myself and my 6 siblings have 14 children between us.
Erin, I highly recommend those books. I have watched The Pacific And Band of Brothers multiple times. Supposedly, there is a new Spielberg/Hanks collaboration on pilots of World War II. If so, I can't wait to see it.

Pip, I just bought “Profile of a Successful Entrepreneur.” It should be here in the next couple of days. I will let you know if it's a good read. smiley

Your Uncle Bud was an accomplished man.  A nicely written biography that was inspiring.  I'm sorry for your loss.
You also "Greeted" my niece, Lynch-15700 who is now a TreeDweller!

CLASSIC! Another great set of lyrics, David. Perfect for a thon. Thanks!

Yeah, that's not gonna get stuck in my head. Nice work!

Now let's see you cover the Run DMC version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5XtpHisqCY

That is a great one too, Cousin Chris! Maybe next time, next thon!  In other news I got a new job and I got to get to work! Have fun today on the chat!yes

Unsourced ghosts...very scary but maybe only to genealogists laugh

Another melody issue: Sam Smith (Stay With Me) and Tom Petty (I Won't Back Down).

Do a parody of "I Want A New Drug."

Call it: "I Want A New Profile." I have been changing profiles that had horrible sources!
Well done! And, yes, it's perfect to use as our Source-A-Thon theme song.
Oh my, if we could choose a best answer, you would for sure get it from me!

Wow, you've been busy this week Pip!

It's been the Source a thon.  Work.  Chores and errands (the whole adulthood thing).   Nothing really exciting.  Was hot at the beginning of the week in SE Michigan and now today back to fall.  Yesterday we had some good rain.
by Melissa Maynard G2G6 Mach 4 (43.4k points)

"...the whole adulthood thing." I get you, Melissa. Exactly true. Thon/chores/errands. Story of my life three times a year.

So glad some one is getting some fall weather! Still muggy and in the 80's here crying

From the upper 70's yesterday to the lower 50's today I understand the weather thing in Northeast Ohio. So with the thon over it is back to "those adult things..."

I'm so glad you are getting relief from both your pain and too much church involvement.  You did very impressive work on the thon considering your problems.  You must have knocked down your "to read" list as well as the profile work.
Edit later:  I just came home from a therapy session that is supposed to strengthen my leg.  I like the therapist.  She tells me to due reps to my ability, not like one a long time ago that insisted she "could make my leg go all the way down" proceeded to almost jump on it and pushed down hard enough to give me a slightly sprained ankle.  This was after we had spent several minutes between thrusts for me to recover from the pain in 7 counts.  Needless to say I never returned to her.
We just started to receive a gentle rain, three minutes earlier than the forecast.  It will probably take down the last of the tree leaves because they predict about five days of off and on showers.  I just saw my first woolly  bear caterpillar of the fall.  It was rather small and totally brown.
What is his prediction?

Beulah, I needed books that didn't make me think to hard (like my usual reading). I had read a couple of those way back.

Thon: If I had done the one-source-move-on tactic, I'd have had more, but I wasn't going back. I sourced those profiles to the max and categorized them before moving on.
I know.  You had one on my watch list and if I remember right, added seven sources.
I can't do the one source and move on, and my brain stops working fast enough after about 4 hours, and then needs a rest,  which is why 28 profiles were sourced by me.
The more rusty brown color the milder the winter according to the almanac! More black is a more severe winter. Let's hope Mr Wooly Bear is right, though I don't mind the snow, we don't need to be snowed in for months or anything.

¡Buenos días a todos from the Old Pueblo! It is 7:00 am and 71F (21.7C) with an expected high of 99F (36.1) and mostly sunny skies.

The Thon was a bit of a struggle for me in several ways. First, the fatigue, brain fog, and shortness of breath are still hanging on from Covid, so I needed to take naps. Second were some family issues that I needed to take care of. Third were the profiles that I selected for sourcing. Naturally, they were the Buckingham Baldwins from the late 1400s and early 1500s. Naturally, several needed more than a source. Some needed an entire redo because of GEDCOM Junk. Naturally, my OCD kicked in, so I only managed 30 profiles for the entire weekend. The upside is that they are 30 beautifully complete profiles.

I had to send an email to Ales, Pip and David last night because I signed up for the October 2023 Integrators Challenge and every time I added a person, the number was not increasing! I finally realized that there only two in the Challenge…myself, which then read Mighty Oaks and a person from another team. The heading showed the stats for the Thon held over the weekend! I did a post on the Integrator’s Challenge, then an email to Pip and David, then saw a note flyby from Ales that said something about the tracker. I should have checked the Sorcerer’s Challenge as well to see if my numbers were increasing. I’ll do it later today.

Last week was a difficult and costly week. The entire year has been costly. I had to replace two wall-mounted toilets in my guest and master bath in March to the tune of $2500. The renewal for my appliances to be maintained was due this year (of course) to a whopping $2400 (for 3 years). My home and auto insurance combined went from $1900 to $2500 in July. For the past several months, I have noticed that I am collecting more and more cold water in a bucket waiting for the shower to heat and last Monday I had a 3-minute warm shower. I also noticed that my dishes were not as clean as they should be. Plumer was called on Monday, a new wall-mounted electric hot water heater was installed on Wednesday to the tune of $5000. I took my first shower using the new unit on Friday and nothing but cold water! So, the plumber came out Friday afternoon and explained that my new low water use shower heads were pressure sensitive and to get hot water, there needed to be a steady flow with a pressure of at least six to seven. The plumber also mentioned that he checked my old wall-mounted unit, which was manufactured in Canada, and while it was an excellent unit, the company went out of business due to Covid. He said that if I had had the unit flushed on a yearly basis (the contractor who installed it never told me!), I could have gotten another four or so years of use. Since it was never flushed for eleven years, it was deader than a door nail. That news just added to my funk.

My favorite holiday is Samhain (Halloween) – the Celtic New Year. I was told that the Celtic tradition was to dress in costumes to scare off the bad spirits and let in the good spirits. I have decorated my mailbox with a big creepy spider and a raptor skeleton, my front entry with a ghoul and a sign celebrating Fiesta de la Muerte (Day of the Dead) and Day of the Dead skull candle holders. Hopefully, will have better money spirits with the Samhain. Maybe I should get one of those lottery tickets. I am not sure what the amount is, but if it is about $7K, I would recoup my heater money after tax winnings. I sure don’t want to end up in the hoosegow for fraud!

I’ve been emailing Ales, again. He tells me the trackers are working…NOT! I am still listed with some guy from another team, the heading shows thon numbers and my numbers are not increasing at all whatsoever. I think ALL future thons need to be scheduled mid-month and not and the end of one month and the start of another. I think that is what is causing this problem. I am usually upbeat despite hardships, but just cannot perk up. My only fun was to find out that Vincent Price is an 8th cousin! I still have his cookbook, loved him in all those great old Edgar Allen Poe films, as well as Laura, and saw him live in a one man show at the restored historic Pabst Theater in downtown Milwaukee in the late 1970s. In Diversions & Delight, he portrayed Oscar Wilde during his prison experience for homosexuality, and the second act living in France. (https://www.thesoundofvincentprice.com/diversions-and-delights/). I was in nursing school, so my classmate and I got cheap matinee nosebleed seats way high up on the balcony. About 10 minutes before the start, Price walked out on stage in a very Price-like smoking jacket looked and said everyone come down to the first floor and fill up the seats. I like to see faces during my performance. So, Chris and I were about 6 rows center at this performance, and he was GREAT. Plus, when my daughter was about four years old, she told me Vincent Price said “not to be scared” on Sesame Street. What an interesting, rounded, and intelligent cousin!

Pip, as ever, thank you for leading the Weekend Chat. It was great to see you at the meets. And I wish all my WikiTree friends and family great FIRST weekend of October 2023. I will hold intention for all of you for happy, healthy, and productive weekends!

This HAS been the year from Hell for you, Carol. I hate it for you. Maybe I need to make a trip out west to perk you up, if I can.

I don't know what's up with the Tracker. If Ales cannot fix it, I don't know what can be done. hang in there, though. I'll be emailing him today.

Vincent was/is one of my favorite actors. How exciting you got to see him in person. So very cool!
Hi Pip, I think we both need respite. It would be great to see you. No matter when your visit, be sure to wear a mask and keep it on during the trip when you do come. The Arizona Department of Health believes I was exposed on my flight from Phoenix to Milwaukee given the incubation time frame. It's reculated air in a pact flight. Even taking the mask off for drinking that cup of tea and eating the back of pretzels allows you to breath in that recirculated air and we've breathed in the virus.
Much like you, I did not have a prolific thon, but I am proud of the work I managed. I hope your fog continues to lift. Sending warm hugs to make up for your cold showers!
Erin, the cold showers are now hot due to the $5K outlay. No matter how many, each one counts and I am sure that each one you do is done with love, dedication and as complete as possible! Warm hugs to you as you sew for Halloween!
Was your previous hot water heater tankless electric?

We have had a tankless natural gas water heater since 2007 and it works very well, it is flushed every year.

I don't remember how much it was, Robbie will know, but not cheap, not even inexpensive, we did get a grant of some sort for part of the cost.

The only situation when there are problems is if the exhaust pipe outside is buried in snow, then there is no hot water, until you go out and clear away the snow.
Vincent z price is as from St Louis, Mo. his father was treasurer of my 2x Great Grandfather’s Candy Factory.   fun facts
@M Ross, yes, it was a tankless electric...called something like 'Eco-Friendly Hot Water Heater.' I know it was made in Canada. Sadly, when it was being installed in Tucson around 2012, I was living in Tempe teaching at ASU. I did a great deal of redo in this current Tucson home and that tankless was one of them. I never got the 411 as to care and had no clue that it had to be flushed! Well, now I know. It was a greate hot water heater and likely would have outlived me had I known to take care of it properly!
@Laura Bozzay...Isn't it great how genealogy makes the world so much smaller and connected. What a great piece of family lore for you. Having Vincent Price as one of the persons this past week (separate from Charlton Heston, not one of my faves) was so great because it brought back all sorts of wonderful memories from seeing his campy Poe movings at the local Friday night drive in (outdoor movie) back in the mid-1960s, to my daughter learning not to be scared from him on Sesame Street ca. 1974, to purchasing his cookbook (which is requires a high skill set that I don't have...I just like to have his cookbook), to seeing him live in that one-man matinee show about Oscar Wilde. And to see him come on stage about 10 or so minutes before the play started and tell everyone in the back row and the way high up 'nose bleed' sections to come on down to the stage level and when all were seated, he came on stage and it was...Oscar Wilde!

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps!

Last week's Source a Thon for Team Italy went really well! Though we were missing a few members of the team, they did exceptionally well elsewhere. AND Team Italy got fourth place in the normalized score. That's not bad!

I basically just redid sources for profiles in the Italian town of Gesualdo and used the Antenati citer. On the last day of the thon, I woke up early and saw that I still had time to source profiles. So, I went to Antenati, opened the app and sourced some profiles of people born in January at the last minute. Was it cheating? Who knows? I got it done, didn't I?

On the blog front, I have two blogs for people to check out. The first being about surprises: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2023/09/52-ancestors-week-39-surprise.html

The next one is about longevity and my grandparents' fiftieth wedding anniversary: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2023/10/52-ancestors-week-40-longevity.html

Check 'em out when you can.

In other news, I worked on adding some more San Pietro births and I think I found my connection to the lady I mentioned in one of the blogs.

I'll also be visiting my great-aunt Elaine as I mentioned in the blog this week. Here's hoping she has some great info! She wants to share pics with me. Who am I to say no, right? We'll see what that brings.

Not much else to report at the moment. No word from San Pietro. It's been almost a month since I sent that email. I have another email or two I want to send out. So, we'll see what happens.  I hope everyone has a great weekend! Thanks for hosting as always, Pip!

After 2 years of hosting board meetings on Zoom, I think I have had enough virtual anything.
Well, board meetings in person can't be any less fun. You're trying to pay attention but the guy next to you is cracking his knuckles.
No, I'm in charge, we have a much more orderly meeting in person, than on Zoom where everyone kept talking over each other, until I made them put their hands up if they wanted to say something.
Hey, Chris

Today's Virtual Vacation was meant for you!
Heh. Thanks, M!
Wow Chris you’re making me feel old. my husband and I got engaged 50 years ago in April. We just had our 47th wedding anniversary so 50 is not far off.

I did most of my sourcing in Louisiana this year when I had an internet connection.  oh was on and off due to connectivity issues last weekend.  My husband even changed our service as a result. Unfortunately that switch over also created some issues so I only got 26 Done. I also ran into several profiles that I was unable to find any sources for so I indicated in Teseach notes where I looked and the lack of results.  All of those were from gedcom uploads.
Sorry about the internet issues. Remember, it’s quality over quantity! I did a mad dash at the end of the thon and added sources for people born in January. As always, I had more fun talking to my teammates than anything.

I hope you plan something fun for your anniversary! :)
we went out to eat and then watched baseball.  our first date was to a hockey game  we both enjoy sports.
@Laura Bozzay...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you and your hubby!
Awesome! :)

Hi from southern Ontario,

Chez moi/at home: what's happening here? Weather has been hot for this time of year, no rain for at least 3 weeks, finally it rained last night. Today I hope will be a quiet day, I have a hair cut booked this morning and that’s about all. Tomorrow is the beginning of a busy week, we have Robbie’s sister and her husband arriving tomorrow from London, England. They will be in Canada until the 22nd staying here until Tuesday, then visiting other family, then coming back here for a few days before they fly home.

We have at least 15 people coming for Thanksgiving dinner on Monday. I have a blackberry and apple pie to make and the turkey to cook.

We have a family wedding next weekend in St Catharines, Ontario where we will see most of the people who are coming for Thanksgiving plus other family, we will be staying overnight in St Catharines and having another family gathering on the Sunday, before coming home.

WikiTree and family history: during the Source a Thon I found 7 unsourced (except for GEDCOM sources) duplicates for members of a family that are closely connected to my husband. sources) duplicates for members of a family that are closely connected to Robbie, so I proposed merges for all of them, and then realised that there are another 2 that need to be merged into a third person. Those extra 2 were created by the same person on the same date in 2015. I have run into duplicates created by that person before and they do not respond, so I’ll wait for default approval on them and then propose the 3 person merge.

I went back to my list of people buried at Alton and picked a name I knew nothing about; The Yokom family, they turned out to be a family with significant history, the family arrived in the US colonies from Sweden in the mid-1600s, one branch left for Canada in 1799, and yes ended up in the Niagara area with the United Empire Loyalists. And they turn out to be a tiny part of the infamous DeCoursey GEDCOM, many members of the branch I was working on were unsourced.

In the Niagara area they or course married into UEL families including the Lemon Family and they are now interconnected with several early Alton families, there are connections between 4 family branches. And it was about 50 contributions because I needed to add the intermarriages to between the Yokoms and the Lemons. The Yokom branch that moved to Alton had a father named Lemon Yokom. So now there are 572 profiles in the Alton Cemetery category. Only 900 more!

Other: The garden is a mess, after being away and my garden minders had not done their job well. I’m going to need to spend several whole days working in the garden.

Now off to get my hair fixed, Virtual Vacation when I get back, I usually work on it Thursday night, but I was too busy with the Yokoms!

by M Ross G2G6 Pilot (748k points)
Hi M, the garden will always be there! A hairdo is alway a cheerer upper. Great job on the thon and discovering the new family! What time is dinner?

BLACKBERRY PIE!! Oh, please save some for me, M. It has been so long since I had a homemade blackberry pie. I remember having to gather them myself with a  bucket for my mom, of course with lots of briar in my hands and arms. It was worth it, though, in the end.

Blackberry and apple pie sounds just lovely! I'm not sure if I am doing a turkey this year, we are taking a family vacation the week before thanksgiving so we might be taking it easy recovering from vacationing lol. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, being thankful for family coming together and having a wonderful meal. I still call my mom and we "watch" the Macy's parade together (mostly consists of describing the floats to each other while we tear bread for stuffing).
Carol, dinner is planned for 3pm, as several people with young children need to get home, kids have to go to school and parents have to go to work on Tuesday.

Turkey, turnip casserole, English breakfast sausages (a family tradition, expanded from Christmas to include Thanksgiving), roast potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, gravy, dark rye bread, the pie with ice cream and maybe proper hot custard.

If I had more time I might also make mince tarts.
Pip, find yourself a blackberry bush, a variety named 'Chester Thornless', they don't have thorns, are easy to grow, will grow in NC, and produce lots of fruit, my freezer has many containers full to the top.
Thanks for the tip, M!
If you really want blackberries, there are other thornless varieties if you can't find that particular one, or look for a local supplier of picked berries, it would be simpler.
@M Ross...so who will be picking me up from Tucson to your place for dinner??? Sounds delicious! I will bring my pancrelypase. I can't eat all as described, but can 'pig out' on turkey, casserole, veggies (no gravy or sausage), no bread, but maybe, just maybe a bit of pie with ice cream and hot custard (which I have never had)! Thanks for the invite!
I'll give you the name of our usual taxi company!

When will you be here?

And bring warm clothes it will be less than 10C on Monday!

Top of the Morning to ya. Seems as though I am guilty of spreading misinformation. The Museum will not be hosting the Quantrill Society Reunion after all. It seems we will be hosting "A Gathering of Old Veterans". Can't wait for the discrimination accusations for not including members of "Old Veterans from the Opposing Side". I think my stay might be coming to an end at the museum. Two of the most informative displays contain information on Quantrill and the raid on Lawrence which in turn lead to Order #11. I think I will suggest removal of the displays to make room for something less relevant to the Battle and times.

The BBQ wasn't the same, probably done with that.

Think I will head to the lake for a little F&F. (Fish and Fun)
by K Smith G2G6 Pilot (377k points)
Sorry the BBQ wasn't the same, K. Sad how that happens over time. I think you deserve a little R&R with the fish. Enjoy!
Well I don't know if it means anything to you, but I was unfamiliar with Quantrill's Raid until you just posted this and have been reading on it. I didn't know two of my favorites, Rooster Cogburn and Outlaw Josey Wales both play off that history as well. My husband is actually also very fond of a video game (Red Dead Redemption 2) that mentions Lawrence and a fictionalized version of Quantrill's Raiders. So you are educating this far off history fan, thank you.

Please don't give up on the museum, it seems to be something you are passionate about and we all need something that lights us up.
Nothing stays the same, out with the old, in with the new. I'm OK with change, if it is for the better. I just don't see things changing for the better.
Google Rooster Cogburn. He was a real identity that lived in So Missouri post Civil War. Part of the Bald Knobbers and Anti Bald Knobbers in the Ozark Hills. Part of the continuing Civil War in Missouri. Anyone that can appreciate Josey Wales, can appreciate life in Missouri 1850's style.

Catching up over the weeks: Ophelia (Tropical Storm) passed through with little damage save a wavering of power and some downed trees. What a relief! I needed to get out in the yard and do some clean up/maintenance anyway, that just motivated us to do it sooner than later. I hope everyone had a fun and productive thon, as always I very much enjoyed the hangouts and love the new prize drawing (scrolling the names on screen is so fun!). Sourceathon is less my favorite than the connect-a-thons, so just makes me look forward to them even more! Two big weeks in scouting, the kids performed the color guard ceremony, my own daughter VOLUNTEERED to lead the pledge, and received their award from the Chamber of Commerce flawlessly! I am so proud of them! They looked like tiny little professionals out there and did us all very proud. They can be super silly (they are 10-14 so challenging age to be serious and solemn) but really knew when to act properly in their uniforms. I still can’t believe my daughter braved the audience of over 200 knowing there were state senators and many important la-di-dahs in attendance. These kids amaze me and make me so glad I get to work with them. The next week we had a new member night so welcomed some scouts from other areas or scouts-to-be to try us out. I hope some kids got a fire lit in their heart for exploring nature. I did a craft with them, kirigami (like origami but includes cutting as well as folding) so they got to take that home as a reminder of fun times with new friends.

Stress, I mean, preparations are ramping up for PTO’s Fall Fest at the school. It is our biggest event of the year, one where many current and former students come in costume to play carnival games and do our area-famous trunk or treat. I know everything will probably come together but I always worry that things will not be well-planned enough and something will fall through the imaginary cracks my brain creates. I also have constantly in the back of my mind that so many things are the LAST for my daughter this year. Last year as a cub scout, last year of elementary, which means each PTO event is the last of its kind. I know there will be different opportunities to serve at her middle and high school, but I seriously doubt  there will be the same level of involvement at the secondary schools. I try not to feel pressure I’m just manufacturing for myself, but I just want all these kids to have the best possible time. I just hope this event is successful as it sets the tone for the rest of the year (if we make a good deal in the fall we can have better winter holiday events, good winter holiday sets us up for spring,) and hopefully we have enough left over to leave the school a nice parting gift. I’d love to do something big and lasting, like have murals painted on the “bus loop” they use as playground space, build an outdoor classroom space, make improvements to the library, new gym equipment, oh so many things I wish we could do. Sorry, I am rambling. But it feels good to dream big dreams. So much of what I do as treasurer comes down to having to say no over and over due to lack of funds. It would be amazing for this to be the year of yes.

In family life, the littles have had the crud come home from school so they have been not feeling well, it has been a mess of soups and juice and hurting tummies and sicky snuggles. I wish there were a way to get kids together to learn such important social emotional lessons, yet somehow not share their germs and keep each other sick all fall! Oh, well. Hopefully we are all on the mend, fevers have been burning lower and lower. I need them to get back to school so I can start sewing during the day, I have 4 halloween costumes to put together! I am excited my daughters want to do a family costume this year, I know the years of agreeing to do things together may be few so I am soaking them in while I can.

Honestly besides some slow sourcing on the thon, I’ve been mostly absent from genealogy work and even my beloved Appalachia discord. Sometimes the living family’s needs are just greater than the no longer living family. Really looking forward to digging in to some randomly kind genealogy RAWKing this month. That and waiting to hear back from my DNA matches to sort out my possible great great grandfather are mostly what’s on the docket.

May everyone have a lovely weekend and a better week.

I like the Connect-a-thons better, too, Erin. Not as hard as tryin g to find a profile that CAN be sourced. Looking at NC Unsourced, there were TONS of profiles needing sources, but many of them were from the 1700s, and most of those were women for whom sources were pretty much non-existent during that time.

You are busy as usual, but then, anyone who has kids will always be busy. I remember!
Hi Erin! Great job with the Scouts! I am sure you helped them do the job to make every one proud, and you should take a big heap of pride in that...well...pride! Your committement to school reminds me of my daughter's hard work now as a high school English teacher. She is lovinging it, but always worrying about what she can do to make learning better!

Fall is the perfect time for colds and flu with changes in temperature, AND returning to school with whatever bugs are floating around. Fortunately for kids, they bounce back even faster than great moms who take care of them, and you'll be back to sewing in no time! And it is alwasy great to take a break from sourcing. It can be a demanding master/mistress. Just ask Pip!

You take care and have a great week!
I try to be grateful in the midst of all the busy. I have goals to accomplish and (usually, mostly) the means to see them through one way or another. I plan to take my daughter shopping Sunday if she is up to it for costume materials. She may even help me a little on her costume!
Tropical Storm Lee hit the Canadian Maritimes 2 weeks ago and it was a mess .

Now they're waiting for Phillipe, which will probably disrupt a lot of Thanksgiving dinners.
I find Connect a thons quite frustrating, I have very few real  unconnecteds on my watch list, some are there for a while before they get connected to other dead people at the Alton Cemetery.

There are only 4 that have been on my list for a while and they are all buried in Alton Cemetery with no relatives found anywhere.

Though next time it could be worth looking at the Ontario, needs profiles created.
I was busier with fund raising when my sons were in high school. So many clubs and teams to join I remember when they graduated because I co chaired the lock-in parties   Don’t worry lots of things to do. Until they go off to college. That is a surreal experience. enjoy your family!  Blink and those little ones are e adults.

Middle Adulthood in Rochester, Minnesota USA...

Outside Temp: 43°F (6°C) Rain is in the forecast.

I took advantage of the MyHeritageDNA free upload opportunity. Results within a week. I've shortened my trusted list due to a burnt out life. Call it perimenopause or a mid life crisis. Whatever it is.

Lately, I have been burnt out due to work, school and everything else. It's obvious. I'm seeing a therapist and will possibly see a PCP regarding nerve pain. I've decided to do my one stop healthcare maintenance at Mayo Clinic.

Prayers, good thoughts, lavender and encouragement greatly needed.

Nursing School is okay. Difficult but okay.
by Eileen Robinson G2G6 Pilot (206k points)

":Prayers, good thoughts, lavender and encouragement greatly needed." You got it, Eileen (except the lavender of which I have none).

That's okay. I'm having a lavender mocha. I'll get some lavender shipped to the apartment later.
Hi Eileen, you have A LOT on your plate as the saying goes. Of couse, I am alwasy sending prayers, positive intention, good thoughts, and intentional lavender your way. Just close your eyes, take a deep breath of that 'intentional lavender', exhale. All will unfold. Hugs, Carol
It sounds like as always, all your steps are in the right direction. We believe in you! Hoping you get some good pain relief and further progress in school. Lighting a lavender candle and blowing the smoke your way!!
I have at least 10 lavender seedlings growing in my patio. self-seeded from my 12 foot long not tall, lavender hedge that is across the back of my patio.

I need to find homes for the seedlings at other people's homes not here, hmm wonder if Greg Slade would like a few, I'm going to be in his vicinity next weekend.

Getting ready for next month's "NaNoWriMo" (National Novel Writing Month, where you write 50,000 words of a first draft of a novel). This will be my 15th year of participating.  I am writing a series of children's books based on quests and jewels: Scarlet Diamond, Orange Onyx, Yellow Amethyst, Green Garnet, Blue Moonstone, and this year it's Indigo Pearl.  I've already written the final one - Purple Opal - and am loving it - including Preptober!

https://nanowrimo.org/
by Ros Haywood G2G Astronaut (2.0m points)
Oh, this is soooo cool, Ros. I really oughta participate. I have an outline, but have never dep[eloped it.
Fascinating! Just the titles alone, but how exciting to have that much accomplished! I remember in school word counts were never intimidating to me unless there was an upper limit. I do tend to ramble on. Good luck with your 50K!

I am so glad you posted that!  I am trying to write a novel and I have the basic outline shaping up, but I am ready to write the first two chapters in detail!   This is my first attempt to write a book, and even have a book that tells me exactly how to write a book so a publisher will look at it.  I will check out this Na No Wri Mo thingy!wink  NaNoWriMo web page!

Nothing wrong with self-publishing, and you can do it for free with Amazon.
Ros, what a great idea for children's books and what a great series title...jewels. Children certainly are jewels. The Writing Month activity sounds marvelous! How wonderful! Congratulations on your very substantive writing skills.

Howdy folks! Greetings from comfy central Oklahoma USA!

When I went out for my walk at 0700 it was 58F. It's finally getting into my comfort zone!! Fat guys don't like the heat and we weren't doing well this summer. The garden is making a comeback, so we'll see how that goes.

I survived my first Source-a-Thon and ended up sourcing 403 profiles. My goal was 300 so I blew by that. My team, Tree Nuts, ended up in 6th overall, and I had a great time. I look forward to the next one!

My brother in law had to have brain surgery on Wednesday. About a month ago he had a terrible headache and went to the ER, where they found he had an aenurysm that had burst. Other than the headache, he was asymptomatic, so they sent him home with no restrictions, and even told him he could go to a trade show in Germany. When he went to the neurosurgeon, the guy about fell over and was amazed that Mike was still alive. So they went in and put a wire basket around the affected area, he spent the night in the ICU, and went home yesterday. I told him he needed to buy some lottery tickets.

This weekend Brook and I are heading to Grand Lake O' the Cherokee to hang out at our friend and watch the OU v Texas game tomorrow. I'll be surrounded by OU fans, but it will be worse for my buddy Jim, he's a Longhorns fan. OU fans are a blast to mess with. If they lose, they act like it was the worse thing that ever happened to them in their whole life. That makes them easy targets, and the fun never ends.

Genealogy wise, its still been Greeters an Ranger duty and that's about it.

Thanks Pip for being the host with the most, and I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Until next time......

John
by John Vaskie G2G6 Pilot (221k points)

It was my first Thon also, Cousin John, but I didn't go nuts!  I took my time, and ended up with 68 much better sourced profiles.  But what is crazy:  My Badge number was 274 and I placed  275th out of 703 participants!   Freaky!surprise  20th cousin four times removed

John, you were great during the thon. I was chasing you for a while there.

Since my brother is here, we'll be watching the Bama - Texas A&M game (My wife was a Bama grad.) Then we'll watch Kentucky - Georgia. (My wife was bornin KY, and her dad graduated from there.)
Oh John, so sorry to hear about your brother in law! What a scary situation. I hope he continues to improve.

Great job on your thon, that's a fantastic score!

Hey Y'all!

This is normally where I start my first sentence with how many tables I still have YET to do on the 95th Bomber Group. But thanks to Ian Becal, I will never have to make a table for them again! YAY! I was in g2g & ran across a thread asking for an automatic table-making button. I put my 2¢ in & the next thing you know, I'm getting a huge file from Ian containing ALL my men & planes tabled!! Now it's just the logistics of getting them from the file to the free-space page.

Like Pip, I was doing the Source-A-Thon, but unlike him, I found no jewels & just kept plugging away, 1 profile at a time till I had sourced 1,461 profiles. Now I am helping to RAWK Rhonda Hill-55016 who started with a CC7 of 1,032 now has a CC7 of 2,218.

I would like to get started on my Cemeteries Project & make sure the Belton Cemetery is uploaded to WikiTree, but at this point my transportation options are walking or riding a bike. While both are do-able, I have to work up to that & it will be quite awhile before that happens.

For now, I will take my sledge hammer & go back to the walls & keep breaking them down.

Je ferai ça plus tard!

by Living Brunson G2G6 Pilot (103k points)

1461 sourced? WOW!  Did you get any sleep!  That is an amazing achievement! yesyes

Yeah, I planned 1 or 2 naps & that went pretty well. It was the unplanned ones where I ended up falling asleep over the keyboard that was more problematic; sore muscles etc.

Congrats to you, Pat, for a fabulous total during the thon! Even if I had not taken so much time off on Sunday, I still would have been nowhere near your total.

And... thanks for your work in the Cemetery Project. I was contacted by a new member of the project just a few days ago, someone who cannot travel due to disabilities, but she has started with a veterans' cemetery out west. Good for her!

Hi Jelena, I'll go with Al Jolson. My grandmother was 20 years old in 1927 and my grandfather worked for Pathe Films. He took her on a date and saw The Jazz Singer...the 'first talkie'. I remember her reminiscing one evening when we were watching television. Thanks for the memories!
Wang Mang this morning, Professor, since that subject is way out of my knowledge set. Thanks!

Good morning from foggy Everett, Washington. The Boeing Tour has resumed, with a grand opening yesterday. Husband has still not actually led a tour, but has been spotting the new guides, as in herding unsupervised children. His spirits have been lifted, but he would still like to "strut his stuff."

Last month was the first in a couple of years in which I failed to reach 1000 contribution points. I love doing this, but the adult children and other family things really need my attention. I did about 70 profiles during the source a thon. I have been pruning my watchlist, about 10 profiles a day, trying to get it below 5000, yet for every one I prune, I create (and orphan) a few more.

On Sunday we are going over the Hood Canal Bridge and over to the Olympic Peninsula for game night again. This time my drinking buddy would like us to bring potluck (providing dinner for everyone was a bit much for her). So I am taking the Skyrim Cookbook and making the Orsimer Venison Bites, with real venison (expensive). I will be making the original recipe and a low carb option for myself. Hope I can persuade daughter to try the low carb option. I will make rice, and riced cauliflower as the option, plus tomorrow I will experiment with brown sugar flavored Stevia and protein powder instead of cornstarch.

Daughter is very much into the Resident Evil video game franchise, and has produced a screenplay that she is sharing with a published author friend online. I read the screenplay and it is well done. I want to teach them both to drive, but at this point I'm too scared and find any way to avoid it.

I continue quilting. For my drinking buddy I am making one using canvas rice sacks with pictures of St. Thomas Aquinas on them. Need to make it bigger. This means buying more of those rice sacks (also expensive, and I'm not supposed to eat rice, except when I share with friends).

I added biography and sources to a WWII Navy veteran whose profile had dates only, no places. FamilySearch fooled me and I created a line for his parents, only to find his parents were someone else. I created that family too. So WikiTree got two families out of that.

Take good care of your good selves. Tell Pip and all of us how it's going.
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (324k points)

I had to laugh! On the Source-A-Thon, I was working on a girl that had no parents, brothers, sisters or children!  It was a gedcom import.  I searched both Find a Grave and Family Search and found some one with the same name.  So who ever this person was, I added parents and grandparents from those listed sources, and cleaned up the profile, but this probably not the original girl that was the gedcom import!  devil

Margaret, what with my shoulder surgery early last month and being banned from the computer for a couple of weeks, I was worried I wouldn't make my 1000 contributions. However, when I got back into greeting (busy as ever) [plus the thon work, I was able to inch over that total.

My watchlist is just barely over 5000. Every time I go under that total, the list rises up again. I really do need to get rid of a bunch of families that I have completed.

How in the world does one find rice sacks with St. Thomas Aquinas on them?

Our local supermarket, QFC, sells in the imported/specialty foods section these little bags of rice. They are imported from Spain as an ingredient in paella. The brand is "Arroz Bomba," from Arrocerias Antonio Tomas, S. L., and the logo is "Santo Tomas," with an image of St. Thomas in his Dominican habit, complete with halo. But the bags cost about $8 each.
Your quilt sounds lovely! Maybe you can get us some progress pictures. Reminds me of the flour sack dresses of the late 19th centruy.

Virtual Vacation!

Today we are going where ' No Man Has Gone Before'. Okay maybe not completely accurate.

On August 1, 1999, we packed up the car and left Ontario driving west, we came home on 31 August, during that time we drove 11,352km. On August 6, we visited the town of Vulcan in Alberta, Canada.

In November 1995, the former Town of Vulcan Administrator brought forward the concept of creating a space themed tourist station to tap into the growing tourist market interested in Space Tourism, Science and Star Trek.

This idea grew quickly into a group effort, with many participants including the Town of Vulcan and the Vulcan Association for Science and Trek.

The Trek Station's official grand opening was on October 23, 1998. The Station was designed to look like a landed spaceship. Today thousands of people from all over this world, and beyond, make the Trek to Vulcan to visit this unique attraction.

As avid Star Trek watchers we could not miss the opportunity to visit. I took 3 of these photos, Robbie took one, another is a scan of a postcard we bought and the other 2 are from the local tourist board.

This one is a replica of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek V has been mounted on a pedestal which includes writing from Star Trek alien languages such as Klingon.

500px-Virtual_Vacation-839.jpg

This photo includes some of the original series bridge crew. Uhura, Kirk, Spock and McCoy, though not well done as I missed the top halves of their heads.

500px-Virtual_Vacation-841.jpg

This is me the 1999 version, standing under the replica Enterprise with a sign in Klingon.

500px-Virtual_Vacation-842.jpg

And this is another sign that is under the replica Enterprise, this sign is in English marking the unveiling of the ship on 10 June 1995.

500px-Virtual_Vacation-843.jpg

This is the tourist centre, does it look like a space station?

500px-Virtual_Vacation-845.jpg

And this is the Mr Spock bust, there are now many Star Trek character statues and busts in the area surrounding the tourist centre.

500px-Virtual_Vacation-844.jpg

In 2010 Leonard Nimoy visited Vulcan and said "I've been a Vulcan for 44 years. It's about time I came home,"

And for the 31st year there will be a Vulcan 2024 convention, just in case any Weekend Chatters are interested.

by M Ross G2G6 Pilot (748k points)

That is so Kewl!  Thanks for sharing those pictures!yesyes

Hi M! I love this! It is not the usual vacay, but it is not the usual theme park either! I was an avid trekkie back in the day (not that I am not now). I think I mentioned in a Chat a few weeks ago that in the late 1970's, Gene Roddenberry did a presentation. He filled the Milwauke Arena with Trekkies and the talk was fascinating...along with outtakes of foibled scenes by various of the cast members.

Actually, here is some trivia. Jeff Hunter, who grew up in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin played Captain Pike in the original Star Trek pilot. ! He was a very good looking guy. He died relatively young from a head injury.

What I also liked wre the creative languages. Dorothy Heydt created the Vulcan language that had very formalized grammatical rules. Mark Okrand created the Klingon language that defied grammatical rules. Kind of goes along with the Vulcans versus the Klingons.

One tidbit that I recall from Gene Roddenberry's presentation was where the hand signal came for the Vulcan Live Long and Prosper. The idea came from Leonard Nimoy. He was Jewish. The story goes that he attended temple when he was young and one evening a Rabbi made that hand signal and it stuck with Leonard Nimoy. Apparently, he incorporated it into his character. I do not know if Nimoy ever mentioned or knew if that hand signal made by the Rabbi hand a meaning, or if it just happened to be an idosyncratic hand movement. I love the meaning..."Live Long and Prosper." So Vulcan!

Thanks for this very fun VV that brought back some great memories with friends and family!

Awesome pics! Live long and prosper!!
Awesome! Have great love for all things Star Trek. Hope to visit someday!

Good evening from Germany,

where the days really get shorter, and they also start to get cooler. Yesterday mum and I were at the Hessian flower and garden show. It is a big areal where there are many different  parts. For example our regional government has a "counseling garden" where they show how you can make your garden fitter for climate change, which things you can plant to become a (partly) self-supporter or how you can support insects and birds to find a place to hide, to name only a few things. There was also an area where you can get ideas for graves and there were many floristic competitions that were held during the time of the show. All in all, it was a great day yesterday. I walked so much that I needed a break today. We could get an electric wheelchair for mum, so that she could decide if she wants to walk or to drive. She drove more than she walked, but she walked quite a bit though.

The week before the Thon mum realized that she had a flat tyre on her vehicle. So she had to get a new one. When it finally came she hobbled slowly with the vehicle to the gas station to get it on.

On Sunday there are General Elections for Hesse, so in the weeks before the Thon I read about 600 pages of what the different parties plan to do when they are in the parliament or in the government respectively. Based on that I chose who to vote for. And I already ballot voted, so that I don't have to go voting on Sunday

Next week we're going to Berlin to see the Pergamon museum before it closes doors for several years. We will be there for a few days and already plan what else to see. I really want to see the Gedenkstätte Plötzensee, where many participants and people who knew something about the Plot of July 20, 1944 were executed. Yeah, it will be mentally exhausting, but I have to know more about it.

Genealogy: In the Thon I was this time in the Maple Leaves team, because I think sourcing in Canada is far easier than in Germany, especially when you don't have subscriptions for the German website where most of the church books are hosted. Beside that, I worked mostly on a stats table Aleš delivers with his WikiTree+. There are stats how often a particular country naming is used in the database, and if that naming is accepted or not. I work a bit on deleting either abbreviations on some of the profiles or on deleting the French "Allemagne" from German profiles. Those stats are also a good way to get a rough overview how many profiles from a particular area are in the database. So that means I am again running through the whole of Germany with the profiles. And when I am too tired to do anything which needs a bit of brain, there are still profiles that have the "USA too early" suggestion. ;).

I think that's it for today. Stay safe and enjoy the weekend.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Jelena, it sounds like to have so many wonderful places to visit in your area, especially with all the history. In American, 200 years is a long time, and Europeans laugh at us for that!

The Gedenkstätte Plötzensee link took me to a wonderful site. I read nearly all of it this morning, even watching the short video of one of the ceremonies there. It is a very well done website. Thanks for this. It was an eye opener.
Doing the mentally exhausting work is some of the most important stuff to take in. Glad you had the flower and garden show to balance it out.

Hello to all of my friends here at Wikitree.  It's been a few weeks since I've posted to the Chat, but rest assured that I have been reading everyone's posts. To be honest there's not been much to post about. However, I did read something that made an impression on me and that I will carry with me:

"It takes every person's story to create history." Ginny Dye

I find that to be very profound and remarkably true.

Other than my reading, life has been same old, same old, while watching our New England summer transform itself into a glorious and stunning New England autumn.

by Candyce Fulford G2G6 Pilot (120k points)

Oh, I love that quote, Candyce. Thanks for including it. It really is true.... every person.

Even when it seems there is "nothing" to post about, it's good to weigh in. I remember writing home when I was deployed overseas and would often hear back that there was "nothing" going on, but that nothing, was everything I was hoping to return home to. Trips to the market or details about decisions on what to make for supper, even complaints about daily household activities like laundry were of interest to me who was so far removed from those everyday type concerns. Everyone's story is important. Everyone's time is spent doing interesting things. It all adds up. Just my two cents.
Thank you.
Your "two cents" is very valuable.

Hello all fellow chatters. Today I am doing something different and writing in a different language.

On the Wikitree front, my watchlist has gone up and down and is currently at 5545. I have volunterred to be a Tester for Hacktoberfest and joined the Notables project. I am also working on 13 countries for the New Global Project that is launching in January 2024. I am involved also in the WikiTree day events which means early starts for the countdown videos.

On the personal front I have my oldest daughters birthday on Sunday and have a cake to make and making a Potato Bake meal as her choice of dinner.
Hi Darren, I absolutely know for sure what language this is! Can I tell, or should we let others guess? I know because an anthropology colleague spent time with this language group and taught me just a few words (WikiTree wasn't one of them). I recognized some of the words, saw that it was high in vowles and remembered where he did his anthropological work!

Mauruuru koe!

I wish I could hear this language, Darren. It looks so beautiful written out,

Your watchlist is only a little bigger than mine. I've got to work on that, too!

Happy birthday to your daughter!

I know that "Kia ora" means Hello (or something in that sense) in Maori. So I knew from the beginning that it is Maori. But I never saw more of it written down, because when I am on NZ-sites I choose by default English. I echo Pip, I also would like to hear it.
I know not what a potato bake is but I also know I want one!
Yes Māori is a beautiful language to listen too. I personally only speak a few words as it wasn't encouraged when I was at school. My kids however have had the opportunity to learn it both in Primary School and High School.

Potato Bake is basically Sliced Potato covered in cheese and a variety of herbs & spices. A nice filling meal.

On this day:

1571: The Battle of Lepanto takes place

1948: At the Paris Motor Show, the Citroёn 2CV is shown for the first time

1949: The German Democratic Republic is founded

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Also this morning (before my brother takes me into town), I want to bring back some memories of my favorite professor, Dr. Gilmer W. Blackburn, a specialist in German history, so I am going to read up on the founding of the German Democratic Republic. This will, of course, make me rather nostalgic. Dr. Blackburn was a marvelous professor.

The battle of Lepanto.  When I was 16 GK Chesterton's poem was part of my English Lit. syllabus.  ( https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47917/lepanto ) Still remember huge chunks of it and can still tell you about  the literary devices used but   I never really knew very much about the battle it was based upon. (It's a poem of its time; doubt it's read in schools today)

Hi Jelena, I am going with The Battle of Lepanto as well for the same reason as Helen Ford. I am so old that I recall reading this poem in and English Lit class!
