Jean Hervé dit St-Jean came to Canada as a soldier in a marine company detachment.  The various records give conflicting data as to his place of origin.  Only one document names his mother, his father being named on that document and on his marriage record.

Options given are La Rochelle, in Aunis; Pons, in Saintonge; and Poitou.  DOB range is from 1686 to 1698.  PRDH went with Pons in Saintonge, but this is only based on Hôtel-Dieu records, his marriage and other document name La Rochelle.

Anybody over in France who can do some digging to see if they can find some evidence for his place of birth etc?  Also needs parents created.  (All data on profile is in French)

In the profile he is named Jean Baptiste. Do you know where "Baptiste" comes from? All primary sources seem to have Jean only.

There is one Jean Hervé, son of Jean Hervé and Renée David, born on 29 Oct 1694 in Amuré, Saintonge (now Deux-Sèvres), 50 km east of La Rochelle. AD79, BMS 1675-1748, E dépôt 95 / 2 E 9-1, image 23/125.

Bonjour Julien,

Baptiste is a nasty habit that clergy had of adding that to any man named Jean, whether warranted or not.  Confuses things no end, and PRDH tends to include any and all names that show up in records, whether erroneous or not.

I'm Curious .. I've often discovered ancestors that migrated to Nouvelle France that listed La Rochelle as a place of origin, but did so because they were there many months in residence at the port of La Rochelle before gaining passage on a ship. This has been especially true for my ancestors who came as a soldier in a marine company. I'm wondering if this is such as case ? Thank You in advance Danielle ..

quite possible Stanley, also, La Rochelle was ''the big city'' for the region around that time period, lots and lots of trade going through it.

Thank You Danielle .. Yes Yes .. La Rochelle was an uniquely positioned, essential life line, merchant trade and military communication connection to Nouvelle France.
