WikiTree 15 Nations Global Tour: LUXEMBOURG (Stop #13)

If you haven't already heard, the 15 Nations Global Tour is now in Luxembourg, having just wrapped up our tour of Greece. Greece was a unique stop on our tour as we were able to tie it into WikiTree's first ever Summer Games event. At least three of our Greek notables had Olympic tie-ins and one, Demetrious Vikelas, first president of the International Olympic Commitee, has now been connected to the Global Tree.

The purpose of the 15 Nations Tour is to highlight various nations across the globe which are often under-represented on WikiTree and in the genealogical community in general. Other than Europe's eight tiny "microstates," Luxembourg is the only Western European nation to meet our criteria for inclusion.

Among the Luxembourgian notables we'll be meeting on this stop are the inventor of the spark plug, a world-renowned science fiction writer, a metallurgist, and a gold medal winning Olympic sculptor (you'll have to read his profile to find out what that means!)

To learn more about Luxembourg and the fifteen notables we'll be visiting there, head on over to the Fifteen Nations Luxembourg page by clicking the link below, or by stopping first at the 15 Nations Global Tour page and clicking on the link in the table.

If you haven't participated in our global project yet, it's not too late to join us. We still have three nations left on our journey. We need people of all skill levels and you do not need any prior knowledge of Luxembourgian research to participate. This project is a learning experience for all of us. If research isn't your thing, we also need biobuilders, sourcerers, proofreaders, and perhaps a few good arborists. Simply jump in wherever you are comfortable or drop us a note and we'll find a place for you. Just be sure to return here periodically to update us on whatever discoveries you make.

One of the Luxembourg notables, Dominique Lang, should soon show up as connected.  I added his parents to WikiTree and just a bit ago found a sibling of his that was already on WT and already connected.

Luxembourg is a nice country to do genealogy with.  Between Family Search and Matricula Online, the availability of online records is pretty good.

Well done Colleen. I had a look at Dominique earlier and couldn't find enough details for his parents. Glad you could find them. That makes 5 connections in this location.
Great job Colleen. Glad to have you onboard for this leg of our venture.

Make that 6 connections.  I have added enough profiles to connect Camillo Felgen to the tree.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Felgen-24

We've been having a lively discussion about Luxembourg over on our Discord channel. For those who don't visit Discord, here's an update:

48 hours into our three-week visit we have already connected 5 of our 15 Luxembourgian notables!

Journalist Baty Weber was connected through an aunt who moved to the U.S. and settled in Iowa.

Artist Dominique Lang was connected through relations in France.

Sci-Fi legend Hugo Gernsback moved to New York City and was connected through his son who married an American.

The wife of sculptor Frantz Heldenstein's brother had a great-uncle who moved to Iowa, long before Frantz was even born.

It turns out Luxembourg's first female cabinet minister Madeleine Frieden-Kinnen already had a connected WikiTree profile which was missed due to a difference in formatting of her name. We still count this find as a win, however, as it is not much different that finding her parents with an already connected profile. It's just luck of the draw.

Congratulations to all the team members who help make these connections possible. Our record for connections is tied at nine for both Argentina and Haiti. Is it possible we might reach ten for Luxembourg?

Not sure if this is where I should comment, but here goes. My great-grandparents were from  a tiny village in Luxembourg, Burmerange. It is famous for Maus Ketti. A popular luxemburgish fable.

I was able to become a dual citizen of Luxembourg because of my ancestry, as were my daughter and grandson.
Sure Elizabeth. We love hearing from our Luxembourgian friends. That's so cool about the dual citizenship. Have you been able to do any research in Luxembourg?  If you'd like to help us connect our Luxembourgian notables, we'd love to have you on board.

We have just connected to the Global Tree the eighth of our 15 Luxembourgian notables. That puts Luxembourg in a tie with Panama, and just one connection away from a three-way tie with Argentina and Haiti. Two more connections and Argentina takes the lead.

Somewhere out the, there has to be some documentation documenting Prime Minister Bettel's connection to his great-granduncle, classical composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. We just have to find it!

Don't we actually have 10 Luxembourg notables connected already?

WOW!  I really wish that I had known and understood about this Tour when it started.  Guess I will have to go back and learn about the other stops on the tour.  For now, will take a hard look at this one.

We are closing in on the end if our journey, but it's not too late to join in. After we depart Luxembourg, we have just two more countries left until we all return to our respective homelands for the holidays. But then, in January, we will be opening up our permanent Global Project. Details are deliberately sketchy right now, but tune in to our presentation on WikiTree Day (Nov 5) to learn all about it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Boy, you sure don't waste time! First day on the tour and already a connection! Not only that, but your find has placed Luxembourg tied first place in terms of global connections. Just one more and Luxembourg takes the official leaf. Really glad to have you on board Tammie.
I am working on another one, hoping to having it connected today!!

Colleen is correct (above) we do have ten connections! Another updated overnight,  officially making Luxembourg our most successful visit to date! Congratulations team! Just five unconnected notables left.

We know the connection from the Prime Minister to his famous great-granduncle, but we haven't yet found the proper documentation to prove it. It would be a great lead to follow if anyone is so inclined.

Josy Barthel (Barthel-526) should show up as connected at least by tomorrow, which will make 11 connected notables.
Re:  lack of documentation for the connection between Bettel and Rachmaninoff

There seems to be a similar issue with Charly Gaul.  There are people attached as his parents, but I've not seen documentation that actually connects him to these people.

Our Luxembourg Wrap-up Show will be held Monday, October 2, at 7:30pm eastern. That's 12 midnight GMT and 2am Luxembourg time. Here's the link:

As always, I'll also be announcing the next stop on our tour, which I anticipate is going to be a really challenging one. In three weeks, I'll be announcing the final stop on our 45-week 15 Nations Tour. After that we'll break for the holidays, but I be posting an after-tour challenge for those who wish to stick around. Then, on January 1, 2024, I'll be formally unveiling the brand new WikiTree Global Project, complete with the first of a year's worth of mini-challenges. So, stay tuned!
