15 Nations Global Tour: GREECE (Stop #12)

If you've been following our Summer Games torch as we've carried it with us around the world, you know that this is the week we announce our chosen venue for our First Annual WikiTree Summer Games. And what more appropriate location could we choose than the home of both the ancient and modern Olympic games: Greece?

This time around we'll be meeting several Olympic figures, including the founder of the modern games, the first head of the International Olympic Committee, and the first Olympic champion (who didn't receive a gold medal because the concept hadn't been created yet.). We'll also meet two Oscar-winning actresses; the author of Zorba the Greek; a couple of world-renowned composers, a cancer doctor, and a Nobel Prize winning poet.

To learn more about our project and what we'll be doing in Greece, please visit the 15 Nations Greece page, or head over to the main 15 Nations Global Tour page where you'll find links to all of prior international stops.

We are always in need of new helpers and there is zero experience required. Just drop me a note or express your interest here and we'll tell you how you can get started.

Update.  Three connected so far - Demetrious Vikelas, first president of the IOC; Eleftherios Venizelos, maker of modern Greece, and Melina Mercouri, Academy Award winning actress and Minister of culture.

I just posted an announcement elsewhere on G2G announcing the formation of a new Source-a-Thon team called The Globetrotters. This is a place primarily for members whose international interests lie outside those countries typically covered by our other teams. I don't know where the 15 Nations Tour will be during Source-a-Thon week [OR DO I?], but this would be a cool way to help the tour while also participating in the Thon. Check out the Globetrotter's Team Page for more details.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the current Prime Minister of Greece, has now been connected to the Global Tree. It turns out that the Prime Minister's 2nd great-grandfather was the father of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the political architects of Modern Greece and another of our Greek notables. Since the team had previously connected Venizelos to the Global Team, Mitsotakis is now connected as well.

Hi Vicki, welcome to the tour!

To get started, you have a few options:

1) Go to our Greece page to join us on our current stop. Pick a notable you'd like to work on and either search for additional family members/connections or work on improving profiles by writing bios, attaching copyright free images, or even just helping with formatting and proofreading.

2) Visit one of our prior nations and work on any of the notable profiles listed there. We do not close our prior stops when we move on to our next, so you can still access all twelve nations.

3) Head over to our Discord channel and check out our lively conversations. There you can see what others are working on, the strategies they're using, and the resources they are exploring. You can also ask any questions you may have.

Great to have you on board!
