I create this [[Hay-7045|Eusign Samuel Hay (abt.1820-)]] profile. On his daughter's baptism it stated he was part of the 35th regiment in India. Also on his daughter's  death notice it stated her father was a Major in the Indian army.

Im not familiar with the British military, maybe someone is. :)

Try searching for Ensign Samuel Hay. This should lead you to The Edinburgh Gazette. I believe he was in the Navy. He was able to purchase the rank of Lieutenant but looks like he went as far as being a Vice Admiral.

The British Library, British in India database has records of a Samuel Hay married to a Lucretia including a brief outline bio

https://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/FullDisplay.aspx?RecordId=014-000143305

This bio was extracted from L/AG/23/10/1-2  (Madras Military Fund Family Registers see https://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/Sources.aspx#L/AG

 for more detail.

Also birth in India. https://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/FullDisplay.aspx?RecordId=014-000354384

I think this record for the entry of  Samuel Hay as a military cadet in 1828 may also be his. https://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/FullDisplay.aspx?RecordId=014-000321078

Note Ensign was his rank as a very junior officer. He was in the Madras army.

Ah, although the links to the records worked when I originally tested, they no longer work. (Except for the record catalogue )

Put his name (Samuel Hay) in advanced search https://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/Advancediscovery.aspx It's the middle three of the five results

Thank you everyone!

Yes father's name John. In this period esquire was an honorific (added as a suffix ) for gentlemen and professionals.

If it is the same Samuel Hay, he was a military cadet at a seminary (training school) aged 14. The East India company had a seminary at Addiscombe, Surrey in England. Whether this is the seminary mentioned I don't know but it was for boys between 13 and 16. https://historycollection.com/this-private-company-had-its-own-army-navy-and-empire-for-over-a-century/13/
