Hi Wikitreers,

As we continue with the US Civil War 2023 Sept Challenge: Shiloh National Cemetery Part II

This category could possibly use more attention.

I have been adding the Battle of Shiloh to each Regiment who fought at this Historic Battle. The NPS shows the regiments and their history.

I’m curious how many regiments fought at the Battle of Shiloh? We have mostly union regiments currently but I believe so far we have 65 listed currently. It’s mind boggling how many participated in that fateful battle.

Thank you

You can find an easily referenced list of both the Union and Confederate Orders of Battle on Wikipedia. They are both drawn from the Official Records, which you can find linked below as well.

If the soldier died prior to Apr 6, 1862, I do not add Battle of Shiloh.  If they died after April 7, 1862, I try to figure out if they participated in the battle.  Reading the burial notes gives a lot of info as soldier bodies were brought from West Tennessee, Northern Alabama and Northern Mississippi to be interned at the National cemetery at Shiloh. There were many battles and skirmishes in the area and then we have many who died of disease and they ended up at Shiloh National cemetery.

Hi Margaret

I do the same if the soldier died prior to the battle of Shiloh I do not add the category of “Battle of Shiloh”; however I do add it I they died after and their Regiment participated. I use the NPS as my guide of Regiment campaign history.

Great job on the profiles I learn from everyone a new idea laugh

Try my webpage that has the organization of the Confederate Army of Mississippi.

Link:  https://custermen.com/DixieBoys/ArmyofMissShiloh.htm

This list includes the number of soldiers per regiment, the commanders and the types of cannon in each artillery battery.  I researched to find information about many of the leaders such as their previous service in military or politics and their post-war achievements.  For example, I think I count 6 who were state governors either before, during or after the War; and of course one past Vice President of the US.  One soldier in the 6th Arkansas was Pvt Henry Stanley who became Sir Henry Morton Stanley ("Dr. Livingston, I presume" fame).
