New member introducing myself

Hi everyone! My name is Barbara and I am a new member. "YAY" - I have been working on my family tree for the past while and like everyone else, I'm still searching. I thought perhaps I could learn a thing or two from joining WikiTree. Most of my ancestors were born and raised in New Brunswick, Canada.  I believe they originally came from England. One question I do have that someone be able to help me with? My great-great grandfather, was apparently born at sea. All I know is his name and he came from England. I'm not sure where to go from here with my family research. Thanks so much.

Welcome to WikiTree Barbara.  Hopefully someone will have an answer to the protocol  for births that happened at sea.

Barbara, we were all new at one point or another.

I would recommend joining either the England Project's Orphan Trail

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Orphan_Trail_Team

or the Canada Trans Canada Trail

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canada_-_Trans_Canada_Trail_Team

Contact one of the leaders and they will run you through some of the many ways of research and how to enter proper citations as you extend (and connect) your family tree.

Best of luck Barbara!

Welcome to WikiTree! I am Dave Draper and I am delighted to see you join our community. Here, we are passionate about building a single family tree and discovering our ancestry. I hope you find WikiTree as exciting and rewarding as I have. There is a learning curve so here is a link that might help you get started. WikiTree How To Here is How To Do IT

Please feel free to ask anyone about anything on this G2G forum!

That being said, some pretty neat things will happen as you enter your pedigree into the system. You may find that some your family has already been profiled here by cousins you never knew you had!

Here is an illustration:  So far, you have not started entering your pedigree.  There are two things going on in WikiTree:  Your personal tree, and the community tree.  Your objective is to get your family preserved here and make a connection to the community tree, then the true picture of your family will manifest itself!

Illustrated another way: You can't get a vacuum cleaner to run with out plugging the cord into the electrical outlet. Likewise, when your pedigree is plugged into the WikiTree, the connection finder will suck in every ancestor you never knew you had and populate your family tree automatically. That's what happed to me! That is what has happened to everyone of us here on WikiTree. That is the magic of WikiTree!

To connect to the tree, you will need to keep adding your grandfathers and grandmothers in our system until your personal tree hooks into our community tree. Once someone in your pedigree merges with the same person already profiled here, you will be connected to the WikiTree! Then you will find who you seek and so many more! Presidents, Mayflower passengers, movie stars, Kings and Queens are all related or connected to you. You don't know it yet but you are related or connected by a marriage to half the members on this site!

So please keep adding your pedigree and if you get stuck, we are here to help.
