Which London Westminster and Middlesex ancestor are you most closely connected to?

Our recent WikiTree Challenge was to benefit the London Westminster and Middlesex Family History Society so we're looking at folks who are from the region in the Connection Finder starting with Duchess Barbara Palmer, the mistress to King Charles I.

Here are the profiles our Challenge participants worked on as well as a few notables from the area:

  • Elizabeth Anderson, first British woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon, founded the first British Hospital for Women, first female dean of a medical school, first British woman to be elected to the London School board, and first female mayor
  • Thomas Ankrit, leatherseller and WikiTree Challenge focus
  • Mary Bickers, WikiTree Challenge focus
  • Thomas Chambers, taxi driver and WikiTree Challenge focus
  • Sydney Dyer, carpenter and WikiTree Challenge focus
  • John Hughes, cordwain and WikiTree Challenge focus
  • Solomon Lee, editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and WikiTree Challenge focus
  • Prince Arthur, governor general of Canada
  • Dame Diana Rigg, actress
  • William White, WikiTree Challenge focus

Which of these is closest to you on our single family tree? If you're one of the 30.5 million of us who are connected to each other on our big tree, you can check with the Connection Finder.

In addition to the above and our many Featured Connections, you can check your connections to any category on WikiTree, such as Diary of Samuel Pepys and Westminster, Middlesex (London). Click the green MyConnections button in the upper right hand corner of the category page.

Let us know how you're related below. If you want to share your connection on social media with cousins and friends, click the "get shareable image" below the results, e.g. Tim Berners-Lee and Duchess Barbara Palmer. Then just upload it along with the URL of your direct connection. (Please refrain from sharing your connection on the featured profiles themselves, though. It clutters conversations on research and collaboration. Thanks!)

Help us find and improve the profiles for next week's The 99 Club feature.

Without looking at the content of this question, should not the Regnal number of “King Charles” be quoted in the heading?

Just in case King Charles III might be offended?

I'm closest to Barbara Palmer (29 degrees). All others are above 30. No cousins. Wouldn't have thought that I'm closest to a 17th century royal mistress ... ;-)

The lead profile is closest this time.  Barbara Palmer at 18 degrees.  Prince Arthur is a close second at 19.  Those are also the only cousins.  Barbara Palmer is a 7th cousin 8 times removed.

If anyone wants a challenge from the area take a look at John Badman, a.k.a. Jonny Walker, a puglist and (per the 1861 census) "Teacher of the Noble Art of Self Defence".  He was born in Surrey, but that area was Middlesex at one time, if my 60 seconds of research on that is correct.  He seems to have descendants with DNA results in England and California and other descendants in eastern Canada.  It should be an interesting story if anyone can put it together.

12 degrees to Barbara Palmer - her great-great grandson Charles Seymour was the brother-in-law of my 4 x great-grandmother Anne Hamilton. Does an in-law connection count in this "degree" business, or only common ancestry?

18 degrees via a common ancestor: Elizabeth Blount.

14 degrees to Arthur of Connaught, via Hamiltons

16 degrees to Diana Rigg - via Hamiltons again!
