NUI Galway extends landed estates database

The Moore Institute at NUI Galway has extended the coverage of its excellent Landed Estates Database to include the three counties of Ulster forming part of the Republic of Ireland (Monaghan, Cavan and Donnegal). It previously covered the provinces of Connacht and Munster.

The database is a great resource, searchable by house, estate and family. It uses sources like the Griffith valuation, the register of deeds and the Encumbered Estates Court to describe the extent and ownership of estates, adds photos from www.buildingsofireland.ie and some genealogical information.

As you would expect from an academic institution, it shows its sources meticulously, which can act as a great tutorial in using them. One word of caution is required; the source for much of the genealogical information is various Burke group publications. These should not be trusted more than usual just because NUI Galway has cited them.

The database and other land records useful as sources for Irish genealogy are explained in Irish Quaker Sources and Resources.
