This month, the Appalachia Project is adding and connecting Moonshiners, Bootleggers, and NASCAR profiles.

NASCAR and moonshine have a long and intertwined history. In the early days of NASCAR, many of the drivers were moonshine runners who used their skills on the road to compete in races.

Below is a list of existing Moonshiners, Bootleggers, and NASCAR profiles on WikiTree but feel free to add your own! They do not have to be only from Appalachia....we celebrate Moonshine and NASCAR (and biscuits) worldwide!

  1. Check out the list below (updated through the month) OR Add one that isn't already on WikiTree.
  2. Pick one (or more!).
  3. Click the "Answer this Post" link and let us know who you picked.
  4. Connect/Add as many profiles as you can to increase their CC7.
  5. Click the green Challenge Tracker button & select "Appalachia Challenge" .
  6. Come back here to your post and let us know any interesting finds and how much their CC7 increased.

You do not need to be a member of the Appalachia Project to participate.  All WikiTree'ers are welcome!  Want to join the Appalachia Project? Click here

I am really curious about her .  A female bootlegger!

She ran 5 speakeasies and took over running her husband's gang when he was murdered by rivals.

Wow, I love this idea. I just created a profile for Fonty Flock. He was a bootlegger who won the first pre-NASCAR race in 1947, which was then called the NCSCC. In 1949 he raced again his two brothers and a sister - the only time four siblings have raced against each other.

He's definitely an early one.  That "helmet", in his photo,is kind of crazy to think it offers any protection.

I will work on Lee Petty. [[Petty-640|Lee Arnold Petty (1914-2000)]]. He was an early racer, father of Richard Petty. His CC7 is 1713. He had a lot of siblings that are not on wikitree, including his brother, Julius who was an engine builder.

I really love that you are adding others besides just a driver.  Thanks!
Lee lost a brother, Roy, in an accident in 1933. He was killed along with 3 others when their car was hit by a train.

Switching gears (get it, gears...'cause cars...) and working to connect Bob Jenkins

Wow, Robert Jenkins Sr (Bob's dad) was a Marine WWII vet who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima! Didn't have to dig far for an interesting find for this one. His dad also took him to his first race, the 1960 Indy 500.

Robert Johnson-77911 and his more famous son "Junior" Johnson-140332 of Wilkes County, NC are founding members of what became NASCAR. Their family were "moonshining" for generations and still (legally) are.

I'm adding sources and profiles to Scott Dickerson's parents, his count would have gone up, just not sure by how much.
