New member introducing myself

Not real new member but not sure how to use wikitree. I’m KATHLEEN Mary O’Shea Anderson. I’ve started a tree on wikitree but don’t know what to do next as far as adding to the tree. On ancestry, I have over 2000 people. I’ve worked on my genealogy since 1977

My grandfather, Giuseppe Guzzo, 3/2/1881 born in Caraffa di Catanzaro, disappeared around 1910. I found a Giuseppe Guzzo that crossed the border into Canada going to Winnipeg Manitoba but not sure it’s him. However, there are Guzzos there and I’ve n met two brothers who’s parents own a pizza place there. They don’t care to help me find out if the Guzzos there are my relatives. I can’t find out.

Giuseppe enlisted in the army WWI in 1917 or 1918. I have his enlistment and discharge papers. He settled in MPLS and that’s where the family remains and still to this day. Minneapolis is over the US/Canadian border

how can I find out if I have relatives in Canada?  Not getting anywhere on ancestry or Familysearch.

Thank you for any help you can supply.

Welcome back Kathy! One way that comes to mind to help determine if Canada Guiseppe is your grandfather would be to do a mini-One Name Study. One Name Studies attempt to gather all the information one can find on a given surname. In your case, you could limit your search to Giuseppe Guzzo. Then, you'll need to research all their trees to see if any have no history and could be your disappearing grandfather. Hopefully you can find parents, siblings, immigration records, etc. for Canada Giuseppe to either prove or disprove his relation to your grandfather. I wouldn't limit my research to one born in 1881, we see a fairly wide variety of birthdates in our research.

I'm doing something similar to solve one of my brick walls - Andrew Ream, born 1811. That name is far more common than Giuseppe Guzzo. I wish you luck!

A DNA test may also be helpful, but given that Canada Giuseppe's relatives do not seem open, it is not likely any of them took a test for you to match with. But it could happen!
Hi Kathy,

I have some Guzzo's who married into the Italian half of my tree (as well as some that are direct further back) they mostly came from Pianopoli, Cantanzaro which is less than 30 miles from where your Giuseppe came from.  The vast majority of mine initially landed in upstate NY.  I just did a quick search on Ancestry and Giuseppe comes up in a tree for one of my more distant cousins.  That tree is private but there are other comparable open trees and I may have some of it in my own. I'll look into it further and let you know if I find any possible connections that might help you in your search.  You never know where these things might lead or to who and any lead can help.  Hang in there!
It’s been awhile but I’m back to figure out wikitree. Very hard to do.

my new question is why I cannot add my brother to my family. I have tried about 4 times and I’m not doing it again. I save, the complete save but it still doesn’t appear under my father’s name as I do. Very frustrating because I absolutely know he’s my biological brother. Come on this is ridiculous. Can anyone help. Thanks

Hey, Kathy!

Let's see if I can help you out. Have you gone to your parents' profile?

From there, go to Edit (For your dad)

Oh the right go to Add/Remove child

Create new profile for child

Create the profile and add the source and info.

Go submit but make sure you click your mom as the brother's mother.

And that should be it. You seemed to have done that for a sister.

I hope that helps.
You could try creating him separately and then linking him to the family.  It may let you see if there's an error message showing up that's keeping the profile from being created.  You can create unrelated people by picking the Add menu and then person.  If he creates without a problem, then you go to add a child on either your mother or father and choose the second option 'add an existing profile as child" and paste his ID in.  If it's still not working, fingers crossed it at least gives you a helpful error message.

Welcome to WikiTree! I am Dave Draper and I am delighted to see you join our community. Here, we are passionate about building a single family tree and discovering our ancestry. I hope you find WikiTree as exciting and rewarding as I have. There is a learning curve so here is a link that might help you get started. WikiTree How To Here is How To Do IT

Please feel free to ask anyone about anything on this G2G forum!

That being said, some pretty neat things will happen as you enter your pedigree into the system. You may find that some your family has already been profiled here by cousins you never knew you had!

Here is an illustration:  Your tree on Ancestry is great, except it really only shows how you relate to your own entries.  WikiTree will show you how you are related to, say ELVIS PRESLEY, for example! (Elvis and me are cousins! Kewl!wink

Illustrated another way: You can't get a vacuum cleaner to run with out plugging the cord into the electrical outlet. Likewise, when your pedigree is plugged into the WikiTree, the connection finder will suck in every ancestor you never knew you had and populate your family tree automatically. That's what happed to me! That is what has happened to everyone of us here on WikiTree. That is the magic of WikiTree!

To connect to the tree, you will need to keep adding your grandfathers and grandmothers in our system until your personal tree hooks into our community tree. Once someone in your pedigree merges with the same person already profiled here, you will be connected to the WikiTree! Then you will find who you seek and so many more! Presidents, Mayflower passengers, movie stars, Kings and Queens are all related or connected to you. You don't know it yet but you are related or connected by a marriage to half the members on this site!

So please keep adding your pedigree and if you get stuck, we are here to help.

Hi Kathy,

Library and archives Canada has resources that may help you with your research including census records. It can be a bit tricky to search at first but worth exploring. Let me know if I can help with this.

The next thing you should do is add more details and sources to the profile. Any details you are not sure about, put in a research notes section.

Good luck with your research.

Regarding Relatives in Canada:

Canada has stricter privacy rules about their census records than the U.S. so I'm not surprised you're having a hard time finding people. Canada's newest published census record online is from 1931. You may want to talk to our Canadian group or possibly hire a genealogist.
