Sticker Proposal: The Scotch Colony

I am proposing a new sticker for "The Scotch Colony of New Kincardinshire" emigration project of 1873.  The Scotch Colony (celebrating 150 yrs in 2023) was the largest immigration ever planned for New Brunswick, except for the United Empire Loyalists.  The project relocated families from Stonehaven, Scotland, to New Kincardineshire, New Brunswick. This passage describes the importance of the voyage they made:

A Family Voyage

Of the “Castalia” the ship that was to take them overseas from Glasgow, “The Story of 1873” has this to say:

“No other ship since the arrival of the ‘Mayflower’ has brought to America an emigration so completely of a family character; and no vessel has ever conveyed so many young children to a port of America for the ‘Castalia’ sailed with 198 children under 12 years of age and arrived with 199.”

(The Scotch Colony Historical Society, 1998, page 151)

New Stickers

My proposal for the text would be as follows for settlers and their descendants:

David Taylor was a Scotch Colony, Victoria County, New Brunswick, settler.

Henry Wilfred Taylor was a Scotch ColonyVictoria County, New Brunswick, descendant.

I propose to use this image (a release is forthcoming from the owner):

New Categories

I would create event and location based cateogires to accompany the sticker:

Category 1:  "Castalia sailed 25 April 1873"

https://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/castalia1873.shtml

Anchor Line ship Castalia, Captain Butler, sailed from Glasgow April 25th 1873 and arrived at St. John, N.B. May 10th 1873 with the first group of "Scotch Colonists" to New Brunswick.

Category 2: "Sidonian sailed 30 April 1874"

https://www.theshipslist.com/accounts/ScotchColonists.shtml

A decision was made to bring out more colonists the following year. Accompanied by Mr. George Troup Esq., 219 emigrants boarded the Anchor Line ship Sidonian and sailed from the Clyde on 30th April, 1874. The ship called at Halifax 13th May, 1874 and arrived at St. John 14th May, 1874. They settled at Kintore and Upper Kintore.

Location Categories (to be created as settlers are identified on WikiTree):

  • Kincardine, Victoria County, New Brunswick
  • Kintore, Victoria County, New Brunswick
  • Upper Kintore, Victoria County, New Brunswick
  • Upper Stonehaven, Victoria County, New Brunswick [later renamed Bon Accord]

Your guidance and suggestions are most welcome.

Hi Christopher. In case you haven't seen it, the procedure is described at

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Stickers#Creation_and_Editing

If three people in addition to you say they would use such a sticker by answering or commenting on this G2G question, it may be able to go ahead.

Yes, thank you.  This is my second proposal today (another is for a new Society Membership), hopefully following the procedure correctly.
I added tags for more visibility.
edit: I moved my comment to an answer to keep everything organised

Many thanks for posting this. I have many ancestors from the Stonehaven and Aberdeen area and I was unaware of the Castalia. I recognize many ancestral names in the passenger list and I hope I may be able to match some people up to my family tree over time. regards, David

Thank you, David.  Your feedback on this space would be most welcome:   https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Kincardineshire_Colony_of_New_Brunswick

Should you find ancestors on the passenger lists, I hope to have categories created to identify them and add them to this page.  Cheers,  Chris.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for proposing these stickers. This is an important and well-documented part of the history of New Brunswick. It's a great idea to identify the settlers and their descendants with the 150th anniversary coming up.

I prefer the stickers with New Brunswick included Scotch Colony, New Brunswick, settler / Scotch Colony, New Brunswick, descendant  to distinguish them from colonies in other parts of the world. And if there were other Scotch colonies in NB, maybe add Victoria County? The choice of image is excellent. As for the ship Castalia, I would use a category instead: "Castalia sailed date of departure". And how about one for the other ship "Sidonian sailed date of departure".  This way WikiTree members who have built their family tree could use the connections finder to discover their relationship with these settlers.

Thank you Gisèle. Great suggestions. I will modify the proposal accordingly.

I agree with Gisèle, name definitely needs to be expanded, since Scotch Colony could be applied to all sorts of things indiscriminately.  Would actually add a date range also to the name, ie Scotch Colony settler, New Brunswick 1873-1874.  There were Scottish settlers in the area in other eras also, so this would avoid ambiguity

Many thanks Danielle.  I've incorporated all of the feedback now into an edited version of the proposal.

I'll agree with Gisèle that this seems useful, and a good genealogy topic, and I like the stickers.

As for the categories. You've figured out the ship categories. The town categories themselves "Kincardine, along with neighbouring Upper and Lower Kintore and Bon Accord, make up what's known as the 'Scotch Colony.'" should be easy enough to create (I checked, they don't exist). I can help with those, once we have people to populate them. I don't know what other people in the category project feel about making a dedicated Scotch Colony, New Brunswick category, to supplement the sticker?

Otherwise, I think that for someone unfamiliar with the topic, it'll be hard to dig in. There's not very good topical resources online that I can find, or even a Wikipedia Page on the topic. I'd suggest a Space Page, with a history of the emigration, and maybe some of the settlers' names. You can then link the page to individual profiles, and it'll make it easy for people reading to understand what the migration is.

Thanks, Brad.  Excellent suggestions. I will start a space page and craft a simple sketch.  I'll see if some profiles of settlers already exist.
I put up a rough sketch and will flesh it out as I find settler profiles.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Kincardineshire_Colony_of_New_Brunswick
