Migrating ancestor categorization code doesn't work.

To be honest, I don't know what the purpose of the Migration Categorization thing is, but I have seen it talked about so I thought I would try and use it. However, I have failed miserably and reached the level of frustration where if someone can't tell me what is wrong with this code snippet, I'm going to bag the whole effort.

{{CategoryInfoBox Migration|fromCountry=Holy Roman Empire|fromEntity=Electoral Palatinate|toCountry=Colonial America|toEntity=Province of Pennsylvania}}

I tried the German language versions of the first two. I started out with British Colonial America, but that didn't seem to do any good. I got rid of all spaces and carriage returns. Nothing I do works.

Hi Michael. That one is a Category Information Box, for use on category pages. If you want something to go on a profile, try

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Migrating_Ancestor

Sorry, I didn't state that well. I'm trying to deal with the migration category stuff. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Migration_Category_Structure

No worries, Michael. I should have realised.

Is this one any help as a model? It may be that the category name has to line up perfectly with what's in the infobox.

It is a choice to add a category or not to a profile.

I find the migration categories very useful to find connections between the families that migrated from one region to another in a similar era.

One hidden trick in this question is that the Germany Project only uses English language for migration categories.

[[Category: Migrants from Electoral Palatinate to Province of Pennsylvania]] does work for me. Margaret might have typed a small error in her comment.

yes.
or copy [[Category: Migrants from Electoral Palatinate to Province of Pennsylvania]] to the profile.
I have no idea what is wrong with Margaret's answer.

P.S. It is worth looking at a migration date like 1727. Before the start of the US Revolution in 1775 and before the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.

Looking at that category, the parameters in the infobox are exactly what Michael used, except for spaces and line separation. I'm ignorant of template intricacies, but I still think the trick may be to get the name of the category to match what's in the infobox.
All fixed, link to the category now works.
Not to embarrass Margaret but since Steve asked...the link in her answer was created with the G2G editor chain icon using "Migrants from Electoral Palatinate to Province of Pennsylvania" as the URL instead of the actual https:... link I gave above. This is quite a common G2G pitfall! It's a pity the Question2Answer software doesn't give a warning about it.

Thanks for the fix, Margaret!
Some of us old Dinosaurs are accustomed to punching out cards to feed into the Great Beast IBM. Then we waited for the next day to see if we were successful or stuffed because we put a comma in the wrong place.

hehe Steve, I worked with punch cards a short time, then they went onto magnetic tape.  laugh

Thank you Margaret and Steve. Steve kindly put a working category statement in the profile in question. The irony is that it is possibly wrong based upon a lengthy Discord discussion regarding whether or not Electoral Palatinate is correct for the year 1727. Sigh. frown

Sigh Indeed!!!

This is not a big problem - it easily corrected.

If the location Discord discussion reaches a conclusion that "Electoral Palatinate" is wrong, then it will be easy to change the emigration category that is now in the profile.

Michael, the category with that category info box coding you outlined, already exists, the category is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Migrants_from_Electoral_Palatinate_to_Province_of_Pennsylvania

Are you wanting to add that category to a profile? If so, just add the category the way you would normally add a category.

Margaret, sorry but that link needs an edit.
Actually, Jim, the link works if you click the fullstop.  (Quirks and vagaries of g2g and links again.)
I edited the answer so the link works now.

Thought this would be a good way to connect Volga Germans that immigrated to America but I can’t get it to work either.  The category Russian Empire, Saratov Governorate to United States, Colorado does not exist so I get a red underline item that when clicked says edit is not allowed.

The red lines say that the category does not exist yet. I can create it. What profile are you working on?

This profile has the red underline.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Giesick-45

Can you create the categories for Russian Empire, Saratov Governorate to United States to Montana, Nebraska, Texas and Kansas also?  Thanks in advance

Not a problem, I have started. There are already categories for migrants from Saratov Governate to Ohio and Wisconsin.
As a temporary measure, I will add all the new categories to Giesick-45. You can move them to the appropriate profiles.

The reason your attempt was not editable was simply that you missed the word "Category:" in front of "Migrants from Saratov Governate to Colorado"

Later edit: All done. I also created the category "Texas, Immigrants from Russian Empire" which was missing as well.
