The Germany Project could use your help working on a wrong migration category

Hi all,

the Germany Project is currently not only hosting research parties, but also working on their categorization system. Also the migration categories are affected by the efforts. While working on it, I ran into the category German Immigrants to America. This category does not fit anymore into the approved system of migration categories. That's why the migration categories should be changed to the approved system and the "wrong" category be deleted.

The locations should always be changed to the German naming convention of the needed time as well. So it is not only a "simply delete a category and that's it" job, it sometimes really needs a bit more effort. But, every little bit (and every profile in the correct category) helps the Tree.

If you have any questions, ask them here, or on Discord, either in our channel or tagging @Germany

A correct migration category would be for example "Texas, Immigrants from German Confederation" if you don't know, where in Germany the person is from or "Migrants from the Grand Duchy of Baden to New York" if you know the German area where they are from and where they settled eventually in the United States.

I'll work on some of these. I had a question, but I found the answer, so please ignore me for now.

The migration categories are in English, no matter the areas are German. So the correct category would be "Migrants from Kingdom of Bavaria to Missouri". But also this category still has to be created.

Hi Jelena, the Space pages in that category (currently three) seem a little bit odd. Are there any pages we could add that would explain the possible subcategories, or maybe an overview page if it exists?

If you see anyone near Osnabrück, or from Lower Saxony ping me, please.

Thanks, Sven

Sven, I am interested in the broad topic of "German Emigration".

I do not know of a space page that provides a high level summary. If I do not find one I will draft one.

Hi Jelena, I will help with this one. I will work backwards from Z to A and change what is clear to me.

Many people would not know that "German Immigrants to America" does not confirm to the approved standard for Migration. The standard is described in Migration Category Structure

Another example category that does comply is for the mid-19th Century: Migrants from Kingdom of Hanover to Wisconsin

Which is why I wrote in the opening post:

Thanks for posting the link to the migration category structure.

I have finished what I could easily move out of German Immigrants to America .

The biggest problem for me is identifying the correct locations as per German naming convention . Many of the remaining profiles in the category have a location that ends in "Germany" - which is obviously wrong for the era.

Thanks Steve, you took out quite a bit of it. Well done!
