Sylvester Norrington was born in Portugal (1850 Census) or "Lester, Spain" (death record). How did he end up in Claremont, New Hampshire? Does anyone have access to the "History of Springfield, Vermont," which is supposed to have some information about this Norrington family?

One thing to bear in mind is that "Portugal," when found in the American census and vital records, also included Portuguese colonies such as Cabo Verde, the Azores, and Brazil (until independence). This is true into the twentieth century. Perhaps he was from mainland Portugal, but most Black folks who resided in Portuguese territories would have originated from one of the colonies, but it's difficult to tell.

Have you looked for a naturalization record in the Sullivan County records? https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/37?

Thank you for the suggestion. Few of them are that early; there are no Norringtons indexed.

Margaret, I placed a sharing link on Sylvester's profile to the information about the Norringtons from the book. If you need more, let me know.

The image linked doesn't appear to be the same family.
I agree. That is what I found via Ancestry's search. Perhaps there are other pages. Just remove the link.
