Would it make sense to have mid-level categories for From and To? For example, "Great Migration (African-American), Alabama to Detroit, Michigan (0, 12, 0)" would go under both "Great Migration (African-American), from Alabama" and "Great Migration (African-American), to Detroit, Michigan".

Then the latter mid-level category could be added to the more general "Detroit, Michigan" category. Then people looking at Detroit more generally would be more likely to come across all of these. Currently, they are somewhat tucked away.

The statewide mid-levels could be added to the state categories, or that state's history sub-category if applicable.

(I am not intending to add more to your to-do list! Just wondering if it would be ok to start this)

Please don't add them right now, Lydia. I'll look at the main category to see what you are talking about.Mid levels are not the important ones anyway; the "landing" levels we attach to profiles are the ones most project members use.

Mid levels are fine, but they require periodic maintenance by leaders or PCs in the project because the landing levels are sometimes added by project members who are not necessarily fluent in working in categories. The proper "parent" categories are not always added to the landing levels, so they would eventually need that extra parent added.

Same thing happens in military categories, which is why a lot of the mid-levels in those structures were deleted. It requires constant monitoring and there are only so many hours in the day.

With the category picking tool available when editing profiles, there is less reliance on browsing the category structure to find a specific category.

I just wanted to add the USBH Project agrees with what Nat said here. We like to keep our category streams as simple as possible--easy to find, easy to create, easy to maintain.

You can categorize profiles by birth, death and any residence locations by county (or large city), and state as it is now. Maybe you already do this?
