I just wanted to say a BIG thank you to all the members of the Wales Project who contributed during the St David's Day challenge.

This year we looked at all the Births, Marriages and Deaths that were announced in Welsh newspapers for the week of St David's Day 150 years ago.  In total we added 33 births, 20 couple who married and 74 people who had died.  In addition we added immediate relatives and extended families have gone on our "To do" list for the next ConnectaThon. Our profiles took us around Wales of course but also all over England, Scotland and as far afield as Argentina, India, Australia and China.

The Wales Team may be small but we're very enthusiastic and I'm really grateful to everyone involved for their energy and contributions. Quite a few of the team had not used newspapers as a source or starting point before and I recommend them for finding interesting stories which will bring your biographies to life.  The National Library of Wales has a very good selection of Welsh newspapers, both in English and Welsh, available to view for free.

Thanks again everyone, and here's to our next challenge!

I must say that whilst working on this challenge I was looking for a marriage to confirm some parents and the only place I could find enough to confirm what I wanted was in a newspaper.

These are a vastly overlooked source, not just for births, marriages, and deaths.

Couldn’t agree more Nikki and Hilary, plus a huge thank you to our Welsh special Jutta for taking a large amount of time in organising a fantastic challenge based purely around newspaper BMD announcements, as Hilary said ‘a vastly overlooked source’ especially the announcement columns.

I thought the challenge was great fun.  Thanks for arranging it Jutta.  Was so nice to see the team working together and helping each other.

Such a shame that it will be another year for the next one.

Thanks for the challenge, Jutta! I am so sorry that I grabbed a name off the list but. was not able to participate (RL issues). I plan to contribute more to the Welsh Project throughout 2023.
