Is anyone in the community familiar with Irish/Scottish research?

Question

My grandfather John Thomas Davison, mother is Jane Richard. She was born in Ireland and came to the United States. I have information on her.

But I am stuck with Jane's father, John Richard and her mother Sarah Henry parent's going back. I have so little information on the parentage of both and their ancestors going back. I am not sure if John's father was born in Ireland or Scotland about 1780 - 1790. Same for Sarah Henry's ancestors. I don't know where else to look?
