Is there a Custom Surname Map App for WT?

This question may have been answered somewhere else before, so apologies beforehand if I'm repeating it.
The idea occurred to me this morning for an custom, expanding, surname map app. Perhaps someone can tell me if this already exists. I'm a troglodyte when it comes to tech stuff. I looked this up, but it's not quite what I have in mind.

I've also looked at the WT Map Navigator and I couldn't see that what I'm thinking of would work, using it.

I want an app for a map (for the sake of argument, Britain, which is where I'm from) on which all the historical regions or counties are shown, with options for current and historical times (due to county boundary changes), from say, 400 AD, according to the period.
When I click on a county, I can then see all the parishes in that county.
When I click on a parish, I can then see the towns and villages, and enter all the surnames of my family that I've researched so far. It would be so nice to be able to click on a map of my part of the world and see which surnames appear in any given time.
The idea came to me this morning when pondering all the different surnames that have cropped up just through investigating one family line alone, from the 1800s back to the 1500s. They all lived in one area of NW England.

One could add the app to a blog or website. I think this could help beginners who don't know their family history get a picture of where the different families came from.  They could then click on any surname, and a list of WT profiles would then come up.

Perhaps something like this already exists. If so, could someone point me towards it? If not, is there anyone on WT with the tech-ability and time who could create it?

Have you tried the Map List on Ancestor Explorer?  It's for ancestors, as the name suggests, but it might be similar to what you're looking for.  https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/ashley1950/ancestorexplorer

Wow. THAT's an interesting tool. I hadn't come across it before. Thank you! Not quite the same as what I was thinking of, but jolly useful all the same.  laugh

This sounds interesting but maybe it would be a huge project for someone!

As for surname distribution maps elsewhere on the web, I find this site works well: https://your-family-history.com/

Thanks Katie! I don't remember coming across that one before either.

I think you're right - it would probably be a huge project. I wonder if AI could create something like that?
