Appropriate naming style?

What is the general consensus on the entry of German names?  I have read that in birth and baptism records the first name is typically a Saint's name.  Should I set the proper first name category as both and preferred name to only Jakob, leave it as is, or set the proper first name to Jakob, and preferred first name to Christian Jakob?

This is further complicated by the addition of a second 'middle' name, I 'think' usually applied at the time of Baptism/Christening.

My Grandfather [[Volkmann-135|John Frederick Richard Volkmann (1908-1996)]].  Although, he went by John.

I am not the expert here, but I put the First proper name in the First; additional names in Middle, and the Common name in Preferred.

Also, this is further complicated by the recent discussions of removing the use of the Middle name field.
