Sometimes they were paid. Sometimes they had grudges against tribes fighting on the other side. Sometimes they had grudges against the Armies they targeted as enemies.  Sometimes it was to their advantage for one group to win over another. Sometimes they had no choice but to protect their hunting grounds. This went on for more than 100 years, so they had many reasons to fight for and against many groups.
